Well, spinners are really our best hope. There just isn't enough in it for the fast bowlers to warrant playing three specialist ones, especially as none of them is express or accurate enough to keep the RR down. RP Singh is a swinger, so when there is no swing or he gets it wrong, he gets belted. Sreesanth can do better, but he tries way too much and ends up being expensive and often toothless. Ishant has the height and pace to hurry the batsman, but not enough to run through a lineup on Indian pitches, and as you mention, he may not be match fit. If we had Zaheer, he and Ishant would be fantastic to have.
Vaas looks like the kind of bowler who would be murdered on flat tracks. If Kumar is able to bowl a consistent line and use his head he may go better than you think.

Remains to be seen though, of course.

It's certainly not impossible, as McGrath showed, but he also had his height. Accuracy certainly works, it's just a rare quality to constanty trouble a batsman on Indian pitches without pace or bounce. He might have it - who knows? But he would be one of the exceptions.

too late to learn
wat do u mean???????

u honestly were sure that the pitch wont take turn and break up in the last couple of days? so many chepauk pitches have started off flat, even the one in 2001 against Australia.... Anyways, the curator has mentioned that since they dug up the pitch and relaid it, this has been happening. Apparently, the red soil content of Chennai has now been mixed with some clay they brought in and put during the relaying and apparently because of that the pitch doesn't break up as much as it should and also it takes longer to break up. Maybe they should just leave a bit of grass in it early and expose it to as much sunlight as possible before the start of the test match.

And I think Sachin getting injured might just be a blessing in disguise for us. I expect us to play Pathan instead of Sachin and Ishant instead of RP. That would be a good side. :) If only we get a sporting pitch, we should do well.

Spin or seam? Take your pick

SWARUP KAR PURKAYASTHAPosted online: Tuesday, April 01, 2008 at 0032 hrs Print EmailFive bowlers, say experts, but no consensus on composition of attack as second Test draws near
Ahmedabad, March 31: After the high-scoring draw in Chennai, the focus has shifted to the 22-yard strip at Motera, where the second Test starts on April 3. And, as D-day approaches, experts in Ahmedabad are unanimously telling Team India to go into the match with five bowlers. But when it comes to the composition of the bowling attack, things start getting really interesting — opinion is divided almost 50-50 on whether captain Anil Kumble should play three spinners or three seamers.

Ahmedabad has traditionally been a tame wicket that has helped spin more than seam. The last Test played here had ended in four days with Kumble and Harbhajan Singh ruling the roost against Sri Lanka. But an interesting change happened in the domestic season that just went by with pacemen suddenly starting to reap rich hauls at that ground.

In domestic matches played since September last year — including Ranji, Duleep and age-group games — it has been the seamers who have done most of the damage. In a Duleep Trophy match between North and South Zone, played in January that year, medium-pacers had grabbed 23 of the 32 wickets to fall.

Gujarat paceman Siddharth Trivedi, who has been a regular on that ground, said, “that season, the wicket really helped fast bowlers. Bowlers who can hit the deck hard have got a lot of help from it. But spinners do come into play on the last two days .”

But former India coach Aunshuman Gaekwad, who knows Motera inside out from the time he coached the Gujarat team, believes the track still warrants the inclusion of three spinners. “With that kind of heat, there is no question of moisture remaining on the track for long,” he said.

“It will dry up quicker than we expect. India should go with five bowlers — you can’t expect long spells in that heat. Three spinners and two pacers would be ideal, with Piyush Chawla coming in.”

The pitch curator Dhiraj Parsana has promised a “sporting” track and not play spoilsport, and he has a supporter in Gujarat player Niraj Patel. “The wicket initially helps pacers, the batsmen can play their shots, and spinners become effective from the third-day onwards. that track doesn’t upset anyone,” Patel said.

Gujarat coach Ashok Patel, however, has a different view. “The pitch really played well for bowlers that season — it helps both seamers and spinners. But there is not much in it for batsmen. It will be difficult to play strokes. One has to be patient to play a long innings,” said Patel.

“Bowlers like RP Singh, who have both pace and swing, will be very effective. But India will have an upper-hand because of their quality spin attack,” he added.

Since 1999, Kumble and Harbhajan have played four Tests together at Motera and shared 51 wickets between themselves. However, only one of them resulted in an Indian win (against Sri Lanka in 2005), with the other three matches ending in draws.

Kumble will have to make a tough call on match-eve. But he’d perhaps be better off taking his own counsel. As things stand, making anything of the diverse opinions seems even tougher than reading a wicket.

Hmm, I'm not sure if Pathan would add more value to our side than Tendulkar.....

Don't think any batsman or all rounder in India could. Sachin and Kumble are enormous losses. If it's a sporting pitch and they both miss out I'd be tempted at putting a few quid on South Africa in this one.

hmm. thats an interesting article wrt spin or seam

clearly, i support going in with 5 bowlers but going in with a 3rd spinner or a pacer is the dilemma

but i would heed Gaekward's advice of going in with 3 spinners but the pitch slows down a lot so may be might consider bowlers who can swing / reverse swing

Playing with 5 bowlers will also depend up on Kumble's confidence in the batsmen to deliver

of the 16, the players that i would like to have in the 11

Batsmen ----> Sehwag, Dravid, Laxman
All-rounders ----> Dhoni, Pathan
Spinners ----> Kumble, Chawla
Quicks ----> Ishant [if fit]

the next 3 positions are open in my book .... how abt Yuvi, Kaif and Sreesant?

I said it might be a blessing in disguise in the sense that we will now probably be able to play 5 bowlers... Doesn't mean Pathan adds more value than Sachin. I would rather have dropped any of Sourav/Dravid/Laxman/Jaffar to include Pathan there.... I still think on a relatively flat track, that side would be a good one.

"I had scored some 1000 to 1200 runs," Kaif told the tabloid Mumbai Mirror. "A bulk of them were scored on tough wickets so the call was kind of expected."

That's what I like to see. Show some confidence and back yourself. Hope Kaify scores tomorrow if he plays. Love him to death :cool:

Sehwag is a very good spin option as well, and in his last 3 tests has taken 6 wickets at a strike rate of 60 and average of 28. His wickets have been high quality ones.

So India could actually end up fielding a 4-person spin attack in Kumble- Harbhajan- Chawla- Sehwag, with the latter two being good complements to the untraditional spinners that Kumble & Harbhajan are. On the pace side, Pathan-Sreesanth can hold the fort, Ganguly is good for a few overs of tight seam bowling with a little bit of swing and his low pace may actually have an element of surprise for those few overs.

South Africa is under the impression UV is going to play.

Regarding the Ahmedabad pitch being 'sporting', surely that is an April fools?
Maybe not. In FC games, it has been fairly sporting. Usually though, it wouldn't be. We'll see - I'm hoping for some massive breakage in the pitch and assisting the spinners.

not sure if anyone posted/commented on this: footwork my foot

what does everyone think? is this the way batting is going or is it just an overreaction to a sehwag special?

If one didnt have Sehwag's phenomenal hand-eye coordination, this style of batting will meet the same success as, say, Afridi. (Sehwag hits very clean strokes most of the time, so comparison with hoick-out-of-ground-ers is not fair to Sehwag) . Lesser mortals, and this includes most of the 200-300 international cricketers as well, are better off with a more conventional technique-based batting, rather on pure instinct alone.
