RP Singh has always been quite an expensive bowler. He is most expensive with the new ball, which is why he has been more expensive recently.

Click here for his innings bowling list.
Sure, the bottom line is that he's bowled rubbish today compared to what we've come to expect from him in test cricket. He may have gone for 5 an over before but I haven't seen him bowl this poorly in a while. Hope he makes up for it throughout the rest of the test because we need breakthroughs from our seamers.

Whatever it takes!!!
pleased to see McKenzie doing well. Have always rated him and with him now opening, I guess it gives him his best shot, since he is not as good against the spinners as he is against seamers... Extremely stylish player as well, one of the best to watch from RSA since the time I have been watching...

Not a great day for India, although I do think if we had gotten one more wicket, it would have been even stevens. Still 2 or 3 quick wickets tomm is not totally out of the equation.

But realistically, I think India will be looking at 450+ to chase in the first innings.

He doesn't look balanced at the crease when he is bowling. Perhaps it is due to him running in too slow due to the heat - I don't know. Whatever it is, I believe it is simply due to a lack of match practice combined with some unhelpful conditions. A bowler coming back from injury does not need a flat pitch. In hindsight, perhaps VRV would have been a better option since he long sticks to a stump to stump line and so would be more likely to get a wicket on a pitch like this - but we still live in an age where horses for courses is seen as dated and that we must rush our best bowlers from injury as quick as possible lest he miss one Test match (God forbid!).

Decent days work by the South Africans. Although, they will be disappointed in the manner of their dismissals, which were all fairly tame but they would have took 300 for 4 at the start. AB looked like a walking wicket this evening against the spinners so hopefully Kumble takes the new ball first thing tomorrow.

The pitch may be flat but RP Singh has sprayed it all over the place and been crap in general. Sreesanth has been far more impressive without reward but even he's released the pressure by serving up a freebie once an over or so.
Indeed, he bowled so short at times it was almost criminal. Didn’t look at the races at all but there was a big burden on his shoulders. It’s very difficult to dismiss a team first dig (cheaply) when you only have two seamers. India given the nature of the surfaces should really have gone for the extra bowler, for they can’t just count on winning the toss.

Note to Rameez Raja, its Neil McKenzie not Graeme McKenzie. Was nice of Neil not to correct Rameez mind, Graeme would have.

You know - I'm not totally worried right now. This is a typical first day pitch, and doesn't really say anything. I'd have liked to win the toss obviously, but all four wickets fell to the spinners on the first day - I'd back them to do a lot more in the second innings. If we keep them to around 400, we have a good chance of winning.

Very happy with the first day. Amla looks like a different player than he was twelve months ago. What's also been impressive are the partnerships. SA has a tendency to collapse at times. Lets just this is not still a trend for the next couple of days.

Crazy selection

RP - talented but inconsistent

Sree - ditto

Harby - out of form

Only Kumble is a threat day in, day out so this is an Indian attack you'd dream to play against

Both Khan and Sharma are injured, so that's just what we have.

I guess, it's a flat pitch .... things could start happening from Day 3 onwards

It's a good thing that Ind removed Kallis and Prince, the ones who can get stuck in .... i guess, Boucher's wkt would be the key

I m upset with the Indian team selection though .... The management could have accomodated Pathan as the bowling all-rounder. He is very useful down the order and would have helped as the 3rd seamer .... No matter, what the pitch, if a team can afford to squeeze in a bowling all-rounder, then it should. Who knows that Pathan could have delivered a few good balls and picked up a wkt or two. Moreover, having two specialist seamers w/o the back up of the 3rd seamer is little risky as there are chances of a fast bowler breaking down or simply having a bad game .... and I don't see Jaffar being a better batsman than Pathan .... Pathan should have played, w/ Ind opening with Sehwag and Dravid

Ind has lost the series in SA, so it's important that it pulls a series victory. Most teams would be happy to beat a team at home and draw the series aboard as that would insure a better standing in the rankings. Even though Ind will remain at #2, if the series is drawn, it will lose more with a drawn series which means it's Ind who has to take the initiative

VRV Singh is an option - but a risky one. Although he has appeared to shelve his pace in the name of accuracy, he is still a potential wicket taking threat. He took 18 wickets in his two Duleep Trophy matches, topping the wicket taker charts. In the entire FC season, he took 33 wickets at a rate of one per just 31.7 balls. The problem most certainly lies in his economy, in the FC season, he went for 4.47 runs per over. However, if the Duleep Trophy final is a correct indication, most runs come off edges and drives, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Indians lost the way after a good series in Australia. It always happens to them if they come after a great win. They are a bit over confident of themseleves sometimes I feel

But they won a series in England for the first time in 15 years just before the Aussie series....

And day one of the first Test match on a subcontinental flat pitch is hardly 'losing the way.'

You would have played Pathan ahead of RP or Sree?

I can see arguing ALSO playing Pathan instead of a batsman, but not ahead of them.

You know why I used that term? It because the body language clearly showed that they are pretty much relaxed and were really looking over-confident. You will clearly see that in the coming days of the test match. But, I really like the way Amla played today.

Could have played him instead of Harbhajan, which wouldn't be a bad idea but for the opposition...

Really, it's easy to pick holes in selection when things go wrong and you had other opens, but I probably would have gone for the exact same team, as I bet many would have.

Yup, me too. The team composition is fine. It's only been one day on a very flat subcontinent track - and your spinners are the ones who took the wickets anyway.

Can't believe people wanted Bhajji out. The guy took two of the most important wickets on the 1st day. RP was bowling tripe all day, and Sree was inconsistent. Had they created some pressure, India would have saved at least 50 runs.

Not to forget the pitch which was not of much help to the bowlers.
