Bell seems to be in for the long haul now, and I'd like to see How into the side also. No reason why he can't turn his ODI success into success at test level against this Bangladesh side, and a successful opening partnership is what we need for confidence in the batting lineup against England.

Cumming has been given his chance and should be dropped now. Failed in two innings against Bangladesh. Hardily going to do much against the swing bowling of Hoggard and Sidebottom is he if he can't handle Bangladesh's swing bowlers.

Bring in How.
You don't think they'd be tempted to open with Sinclair again and bring Styris back into the middle order?

FWIW I think that'd be an awful decision as Sinclair has proven before that he is not an opener, but it wouldn't shock me if they did it anyway.

I was thinking that as well actually, but would be a wrong move. How is going fairly well and is a opener and we should and give Sinclair some consistency for a change.

I'd drop O'Brien for Styris.

This would my my 2nd Test team and my team for the England series.

How
Bell
Fulton
Fleming
Sinclair
Styris
Oram
McCullum
Mills
Vettori
Martin

Yeah that'd make the most sense with Franklin out, providing Styris's knees/back are feeling good enough for him to be used as the fifth bowler. I actually think Oram bowled pretty well in South Africa and I'd back him above O'Brien as the third seamer anyway so that's not too much of an issue for mine.

It'd get complicated once Franklin was back though.

Depends on the make-up of the side, if you wanted Franklin to be a specialist bowler then he'd replace Martin or Mills (depending who was bowling better), or he could play as a bowling all-rounder, replacing the middle order batsman who is in the worst form.

I don't think you'd need that much batting if you had Franklin, so you'd have to drop Styris (or Fulton/Sinclair if Styris was batting well), defeating the purpose of it in the first place.

What if one of the fast bowlers break down in the first innings?

Got to have three specialist seamers IMO.
Just give Daniel Vettori a big long bowl, it's something he's always complained about, and he's much happier when he gets to bowl in long spells.

You might not need it, but we both know Franklin is better than both Mills and Martin, so his batting shouldn't really come into it, if the bowling is good enough. If the bowling had been weak, then drop a specialist batsman and put Franklin in there.

My point wasn't that Franklin would miss out, but that the bowling of Mills/Martin would be of more value to the team than the batting of one Styris/Fulton/Sinclair if Franklin was in the team, because he adds batting as well.

It seems we're screwed a bit with the opening combination.

To drop Cumming now would be a waste of time as its only a short series and How would only get the one test before England. Also Cumming could hit form next game and score big or alternatively fail then we'd either persist with him and watch the english bowlers take advantage of his technical defiecincies or play How who is an unknown quantity in tests now.

Cumming has failed in 5/6 innings as have many other batsmen that have gone on to have good careers. What we need to judge is who has the most ability and potential to succeed over the next two years: How or Cumming?

Cumming - one 50+ score from 18 Test innings at an average of 24.93. Clearly says in my mind that he isn't up to Test standard.

You have to draw the line somewhere.

That average is still about 10 runs more than How's.

He should be given the next game to perform or be dropped.

One way or another, whatever combination we select for England, can we stick with them for a while please, Braces?

Oram's batting waaaaaay too low for mine, being the fact he has the highest average in the team currently he should be at 6. No point in loading up the top order if your bowlers can't take wickets. Fulton or Sinclair to miss out.

Ehsanul Haque is the man I've got in mind.

Picked for Bangladesh back in 2002, despite only having one good domestic season and a string of failures for the 'A' side. I reckon he's well worth a shot now, in the last four seasons he's scored 2924 runs at an average of 49.55. He should definitely be in contention for the Test side.
You would have thought so, but the selectors don't seem to like him. The other thing to take into account is the lack of top-class bowling he faces back home, with the internationals usually away. He'd have to score some runs for the A team (whenever they next have a series) to get back in the squad. Nazimuddin may be higher the pecking order at the moment.

Hopefully Mortaza gets demoted to number 9.

Scoring 10 off 4 balls isn't really smart Cricket.

I would also bring in Saleh for Aftab.

I actually would like to see:

1 Siddique
2 Iqbal
3 Nafees
4 Ashraful
5 Saleh
6 Bashar
7 Rahim
8 Hague Jnr
9 Mortaza
10 Hossain
11 Islam

Saleh and Nafees switching between 3 and 5, wouldn't be bad either. I just think it's good to not have Ashraful and Bashar batting after each other.

There is no way that Styris will get recalled and to be honest if he does i give up.

The only change i see possibly happening is Mason for Obrien - though id also like to see how for cumming

Yeah can't see Styris getting recalled for the second test. Have a feeling they'll go in with the same line up, thanks to O'Diren's two late wickets which will surely net him another undeserved test spot.

I am hoping that Ashrafel takes O'Brien to the cleaners in the second test. It's the only way we will get rid of O'Brien.

And NZ better be careful with Styris, because he is the next big player I see signing with the ICL.
