Again, if you want him to score runs for more than twenty minutes, e.g, controlled aggression towards a defensive field - I'd still have Dravid or Tendulkar.
I believe the stage is set for smaller cameos, was set after the openers got a 75 run stand at almost 4 an over, but is certainly set now. Uncontrol the aggression, even a good 20 minutes (ie 20 deliveries total, 12 to Dhoni and 25-30 runs from that) is OK.

Would be disappointing for Dhoni to not come out blazing tomrrow morning (perhaps an over or two to settle down). Then with 50 more in as quick a time as possible declare, if Dhoni falls just a little short, perhaps even consider Zaheer or Harbhajan.

If Dhoni, Ganguly fall a lot short - then send Dravid, Tendulkar to add another 250-300 and wear out the bowlers. In that scenario hope Laxman gets to extend his strong of 4 notouts, wonder what is the record for that.

In terms of series : India & Pakistan have to remember that Bangalore is the venue for 3rd test, possibly one of the weakest for the home team. A win here is not just ornamental, but possibly key to the series win by either side.

Ah, The Great Myth of Dravid. He doesn't play like Dhoni, not because he can't, but because he is not an idiot.
I agree with you. I don't like Dhoni's style of play either. However, you were talking about Dravid showing controlled aggression over a sustained period of time and I just asked you if you would mention a couple of instances when he has done so.

Dhoni was struggling with Kaneria coming around the wicket. It was tough to go over the top with Kaneria hitting the rough. I think the same would have occurred for Dravid and Tendulkar.

I can't believe people are questioning the promotion. It made sense, it just hasn't worked out as planned.

Yes Dravid can come out and bat quickly (see India vs. Aus Sydney 2004) but this pitch isn't as flat as that, and there was no harm in sending in Dhoni, even if he could hit 30 (15). It ended up being tougher than that for every batsman.

India is playing defensive cricket here.. and i understand why. they are trying to draw this match so that they don't lose the test series.. if this match is draw.. the worst that can happen to india is pakistan level the series. if they wanted a result they would have played attacking cricket.. they simply promoted dhoni because of bating practice.

I'm not as familiar with Test cricket, so was wondering if someone would mind explaining to me what would have to occur in order for this particular match to result in a DRAW. Kinda confused on that.
Pakistan would have to bat on for the entirety of the fifth day without losing all of their wickets, and India would need to prevent them from reaching their total of runs scored.

I think you ought to trust the batsman in their positions more often than not. This comparison is not particularly fair, but the Aussie lineup expect every one of their batsman to be aggressive or defend depending on the situation, and though they do sometimes switch it up - more often than not, they trust their batsmen. You don't get to play a hundred Tests without possessing the ability to do both. Did Dhoni's promotion hurt? Maybe not, but then again, maybe someone with much more experience would have been able to exploit the pitch better. Obviously, this is just a guess, but even if it had worked out and Dhoni hit 40(20), I would still say to go with Dravid and Tendulkar in the future.

India today declared after 6.4 overs, scoring 43 runs at ~ 6.5/over.
(For overall run rate of 4.3)

Pakistan need 345 in 82 overs , asking rate a very gettable 4.2/over on a dead pitch.
