4th Test - Cricket Web XI vs England
Day 2 - Cricket Web XI further dominance
Butler drives pleasantly through off-side
Cricket Web XI sprinted to the box seat of the fourth Test against England. After dismissing their hosts cheaply, CW XI surged to the lead while losing only 4 wickets on an entertaining second day.
There was very little time wasted in wrapping the England tail in the morning session. David Kennett launched an attack of short balls at the tailenders and accounted for Stuart Broad and Ryan Sidebottom after they had frustrated with a partnership of 31 for the eighth wicket. Panesar was twice dropped and then trapped lbw by Nick Borcich. The fast bowler, in his first match, went around the wicket and bowled sharp and full to get his first Test wicket. England were all out for 251.
The two overs before lunch were without incident and the CW XI openers added 7 en route to a 24-run stand. It was then, early in the second session, that Pete Young drove loosely and nicked to Ian Bell in the slips. Mork stuck around but hardly looked the form man he did in previous matches, until he was caught down the legside, flicking at Monty Panesar. Yet even at the unease of 61-2, Andrew Cloete was barely perturbed. Instead he marched imperiously on to another milestone - 50 - with a six off Panesar. He was crucially dropped by Panesar on 81, but for the most part Cloete and Butler proceeded with ease through the evening session.
Cloete plays a forward defensive shot worthy of such facial hair
Butler flicked past mid-on and scampered through for a single and his half-century. Five balls later there was a bigger celebration to be had - a ton for Cloete. Such a familiar sight, Cloete flashed Collingwood over point for four, and raised his bat for a third Test hundred of the series. All the excitement soon got to Butler and he skied to deep midwicket on 57. The crowd shuffled and murmured at the arrival of Shan Jasotharan, but there were no explosive highlights on this day. The young man continued to struggle against Panesar, perishing in the exact manner of Butler before him. He trudged past Rob Dauth on his way to the pavilion, slamming his bat into the ground.
And Panesar continued to prosper. Dauth pushed forward and nicked the spinner to bat-pad on the offside, but Michael Vaughan floored the simple chance. With that boost, CW XI approached stumps with more care and comfort and ended the day in the lead by 39 runs, at 290-4.
