South Africa will be looking to rebound from a heartbreaking loss in West Indies where they capitulated on the final day chasing 232 while England will be looking to build on their morale boosting win in New Zealand. But the task will not be made easy given the very flat but hard nature of the Oval pitch, that even if it will give the quicks good bounce & carry the batsman on both sides will backing themselves to score freely in this test.
With regards to selection England are likely to be keep the winning side from New Zealand but given the nature of the pitch the the extra pace of Harold Larwood could be considered if the variation of Barnes is deemed to be a negative option. While the South Africans have form worries over old age players Bruce Mitchell & Dudley Nourse, so with the likes of Gary Kirsten, Jimmy Cook, Daryll Cullinan, Peter Kirsten, Herbie Taylor all knocking on the door, the selectors have some hard decisions to make.
