The All-time Series

Matty Haydens gun form in this series should put to bed all those silly arguments about him not being able to handle world class bowlers ;)
Doesn't solve the argument on Lillee > McGrath though as they both have 16 wkts...then again as Lillee is the opening bowler and McGrath is first change, this surely implies that Lillee is greater :)

Just wondering for the India and NZ match how much time was left in the match?

490+ overs were bowled in that match. It should have been a draw IMO, even with a good amount of spinners playing.
Hey thats right dude I also thought that:)

Doesnt really matter, Merv Hughes > them both anyway ;)

Good job winning in Colombo though I don't like our first innings total. And Lillee opens the bowling only so McGrath can laugh at his ineptness before taking over and doing the real work.

Bradman getting found out here. It is very sad to see him being a shadow of his former self. So time to drop him and bring in Ponting?

Round 5 preview

txt, Game: 17, England vs Pakistan, Headingley, Leeds, England

Both England & Pakistan come into this 5th round test match, after hard fought draws in their previous fixtures. England thanks to a brilliant Ian Botham century managed to bat long enough to prevent South Africa from winning at the Oval while Pakistan battled encouraging over five days in Australia to draw in Brisbane. But now confronted with a combination of a absolute green-top, overcast conditons and two pace very adept of exploiting the conditons, the batsmen on both sides techniques will be put the ultimate test so we could have a very short test match.

Pakistan are likely to keep faith with the same side that drew in Australia, although the age old problem of top-order problems have been a problems for them with the classy Saeed Anwar struggling, thus his place could be under threat from Imran Khan's cousin Majid Khan. England also will be monitoring the form of Hobbs, Barrington & Barnes with the likes of Sutcliffe, Gooch, Boycott, Pietersen, Dexter, Statham & Larwood all ready to pounch on any casualties.

England (probable): Hutton, Hobbs/Sutcliffe, Hammond, Compton, Barrington/Pietersen, Stewart, Botham, Rhodes, Trueman, Snow, Barnes/Larwood/Statham.

Pakistan (probable): Anwar/Majid Khan, Mohammad, Abbas, Miandad, Inzamam, Iqbal, Imran Khan, Latif, Akram, Akhtar, Waqar.

Game 18: South Africa vs Australia, Newlands, Capetown, South Africa

Even though both the Springbooks & Aussies come into this test on the back of hard fought test match against the England & Pakistan that they may have felt deep down they should have won, the talk coming into match has been the the great Sir Donald Bradman who has been series of test matches since the infamous bodyline series.

Now to average 53 is not bad by any means but giev the standards he set throughout his career some ardent students of the game are beginning to suggest that given the quality of bowling the Don has encountered to date is far beyond the quality of bowling he faced during his time some technical flaws have been exposed. But the great man doesn't seem too perterbed ``Once Australia keep winning & i can get a few i'll be fine`` said the Don with with a characteristically deep NSW acsent.

But back to the test, a very hard surface with a tinge of green greeted the sides, so another keen tustle between bat & ball is expected in this test match.

South Africa (probable): Kirsten, Richards, Kallis, G Pollock, Nourse/Cullinan, Rice, Lindsay, Procter, P Pollock, Tayfield, Donald.

Australia (probable): Simpson, Hayden, Bradman, Chappell, Waugh, Miller, Gilchrist, Lindwall, Warne, Lillee, McGrath.

Game 19: Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, Sinhalese SC, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Unfortunately for Sri Lanka & New Zealand even though they may contain some individually brilliant players in their ranks, overall as a side based they don't seem to have the steel to cancel out any of the other 6 major nations over 5 days, a harsh sentiment but thats sadly seems to be the truth. So this test match will be interesing since both sides will be hoping for a win to get some confidence going. Sri Lanka are at home so they are likely to hit the kiwis with a strong spin & push for a victory.

Sri Lanka (probable): Jayasuriya, Atapattu, Jayawardene, PA De Silva, Sangakkara, Ranatunga, J Ratnayake, Vaas, S De Silva, A De Silva.

New Zealand touring squad: Turner, Wright, Sutcliffe, Crowe, Fleming, Jones, Cairns, Smith, Hadlee, Vettori, Bracewell, Howarth, Bond.

Top stuff this. What are you using to do it? I can only download the shareware version of Internet Test Cricket, and I'd like the real deal!

And Bradman continues to dissapoint with only 15 & 108, to keep his series average at a very sub-par 55....and everyone was calling Hayden a flat track bully, I guess those 1930's wickets were pretty flat after all 8-)

Oh and great job by Lillee to take 8 wkts, so he remains as the premier Australian fast bowler with 24 wkts in the series so far (Lindwall has 22, while McGrath only has 18)....I think its time to bring in Davidson for McGrath, in fact why not just select my signature team ;)

a programme called VCR which uses players stats to simulate matches, you can find it right here in the downloads section of CW. But i got to admit simulating an All-time series using it is an heaache..

No need to worry my friend, with a semi-final place pretty much secured after 5 test, i guess Australia will give some of the great fringe talent a run.

If you're going to drop McGrath for Davidson, be prepared for a vicious attack from SS

ummm....I guess that GMOLAS is dead then  About time :)

I don't see that at all. As far as I can tell all SS said was that if McGrath didn't perform he should be dropped. This is only a simulation, in real life I'm sure McGrath fans would contend that he never under performed so the prospect of his being dropped never arose.

txt, Game 20: West Indies vs England, Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica

Historically especially the during the glorious days of West Indian cricket, a West Indies vs England clash is usually a very one-sided contest with the windies bowlers causing absolute torture to English batsmen while the batsmen assaulted their bowlers in an exciting combination of calypso cricket. But going into this test match in 3rd place the English tentatively would have their chins up, given that if you discount performances of English fast bowlers in the new millenium against average West Indian opposition, England finally come to the caribbean with a fast-bowling attack capable of throwing serious punches at the West Indians.

So some intuitive selection have been made by England's selectors. Firstly in the batting Essex legend Graham Gooch has been called up as back-up instead of Herbert Sutcliffe or Geoff Boycott given his solid performances vs the West Indian pace battery during his career, due the inconsistent form of Surrey great Jack Hobbs. Ken Barrington has been axed given the selectors feeling that an middle-order rock would not be that effective in the West Indies thus the attacking duo of Kevin Pietersen & Ted Dexter have been called up. While the most entralling selection that really shows how serious the English are of winning this test is the selection of Frank "Typhoon" Tyson, the great one series wonder & arguably England's fastest ever bowler to bolster to fast-bowling ranks, especially with the Sir Ian Botham indifferent record against West Indian opposition.

For the West Indies selection is easy, given an unbeaten run in the competition. Changes were expected to be made given a semi-final birth secured, but given the importance of any clash against England to the players and the public an unchanged side is expected.

West Indies (probable): Hunte/Haynes, Lara, Headley, Richards, Sobers, Dujon, Marshall, Holding, Garner, Ambrose.

England touring squad: Hutton, Hobbs, Gooch, Hammond, Compton, Pietersen, Dexter, Stewart, Botham, Trueman, Snow, Larwood, Tyson.

Game 21: Pakistan vs India, Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore, Pakistan

The most anticipated clash of the competition has arrived. Pakistan vs India the greatest of all cricketing rivalries lock horns in this crucial 6th round test match with both teams needing a victory to get their hopes of reaching the semi-final back on track. Both come into this clash on the back of contrasting results, Pakistan come home after two tough away fixtures in Australia & England especially where they battled hard in testing conditions only to agonisingly fall short of victory while India would have had their confidence boosted with a good win in Sri Lanka.

The type of pitch has been the talk coming into the test match, would it be a slow turner this turning the test match into a battle of the spinners? or would the Pakistan use their home advantage are prepare a deck assist their fast-bowling armory?. As expected the latter has occured thus this crucial contest will be the classy Indian batting vs the Pakistani fast-bowling armory. The cricketening world cannot wait.

Pakistan (probable): Anwar/Majid Khan, Abbas, Miandad, Inzamam, Iqbal, Imran Khan, Wasim, Qadir, Waqar.

Indian touring squad: Gavaskar, Dravid, Tendulkar, Hazare, Umrigar, Vengsarkar, Mankad, Kapil Dev, Kirmani, Kumble, Nissar, Amar Singh, Srinath.

Game 22: Australia vs Sri Lanka, Adelaide Oval, Australia

The least compelling of the 6th round fixtures. The Australia's are already guaranteed a semi-final place and will be looking to give some of their great fringe talent a run, while Sri Lanka continue to play for pride and would have been disappointed coming into this fixture after failing to win at home over New Zealand.

Again even though scoring a century in South Africa, Australia captain Don Bradman's critics have continue to show scrutiny. But they will have to but their reasoning on hold for this test as Australia make changes. In comes Trumper, Ponsford, Ponting, Harvey, Marsh, Davidson, O'Reilly, Spofforth, while the Sri Lanka are likely to revert back to their common XI of the tournament although nothing has been confirmed.

Australian XI: Trumper, Ponsford, Ponting, Chappell, Harvey, Waugh, Marsh, Davidson, Lindwall, O'Reilly, Spofforth.

Sri Lanka touring squad: Jayasuriya, Atapattu, Gurusinha, Dias, A De Silva, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Ranatunga, Vaas, J Ratnayake, R Ratnayake, Malinga, Muralitharan.

Not really. Why would you keep someone who isn't performing? McGrath usually outperforms everyone else - if he isn't then he should be dropped. What else would I say?
But has Pigeon really under-performed?. 18 wicket @ 27 as first change to Lillee/Lindwall one of the best new-ball partnerships you could ever imagine is pretty good i'd say.
