Went straight by averages and excluded Flower due to the short length of time that he played in the period in question. Unless someone can give me specific reasoning for why one batsman's runs are worth more than another's I see no reason that the most prolific run scorers should not be picked.
Flowers record is impressive and he had played more than 20 tests so I felt it pretty fair to include him in this. I'm also quite sure someone will come along (Richard) and give you their opinion on way one batsman's runs are worth more than another's (sorry about the reference Rich). ;)

Unless you consider I also stated 40+ average. Ah well.
I took that as meaning that one had to average 40+ to make your list; not having to average such to be eligible for my vote. I'll have Younis Khan if I can't have Ganga. :p

I'll try to explain mine:

Ponting is the best, no doubt, for me at least. What Hayden has done as an opener no others have done, and the way he has dismantled attacks cracks him in that group. And Dravid has done better against Australia than Kallis, and for me that's more important than the few runs difference on their average.

I feel openers probably do have a harder job than middle order bats in most cases, so for me I find it difficult to rate them alongside middle order batsmen.

Feel the dismantling attacks bit is rubbish though, but you probably already guessed my feelings on that.

Yeah, he'll probably come up with some theory on how Yousuf's presence at the crease disrupts the earth's magnetic field, and thus everyone's hands become repellent to the ball when hes at the crease, leading to him being dropped 7,846,952 times more than any other batsman in the history of cricket. I know.

Waiting for the day he accuses someone of black magic TBH.

Flower, Kallis and Sangakara. Probaly not the best batsmen, but all have a reasonable claim and I like to watch them. And voting for Ponting is boring.

And yes Athlai, I did restrain myself from voting Fleming on purpose.

EDIT: and how is Dontcloseyoreyes voting for more than three people? I'll just assume my computer is screwing up as per usual.

He's being sinister and I can't believe you didn't vote for Flem TBH.

If you make it multi-poll, you can't control how many options someone picks. It's just that Athlai asked us to vote for 3, but Smith's a ****.

Sangakarra isn't close IMO. Not only does his batting drop off when he wicket-keeps, he is heavily inflatted by Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
