Sangakarra isn't close IMO. Not only does his batting drop off when he wicket-keeps, he is heavily inflatted by Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
Once again, he makes my top three because of what he's done in NZ and what I have seen.

Alright. Gilchrist has done much much better against New Zealand, in New Zealand too, though. But to each their own.

There are so many batsmen who have done so well since 2000 in test cricket, the likes of Ponting, Kallis, Dravid, Lara and Sanga have all played some excellent cricket and they all have had their moments but the man who stands out during that period in test cricket is Matthew Hayden he has been simply superb he has scored runs in all sorts of condition against all sorts of attacks and he has intimidated bowling attacks around the world he also had a dull patch for a sometime where he didn't score a test hundred for more than an year but still he overcame that period as a stronger player (mentally) and atm he is probably the best batsman in the world (on current form).

In NZ they've done pretty much as well as each other, Sanga's got 7 innings here and Gilchrists got 8. I guess I rate Sanga over Gilchrist because I feel he is a technically superior batsman, and also because he comes from a poorer team than Gilchrist. Gilchrist's the better wicket keeper batsman anyday though.

I think I am biased against Kallis. Seriously, I must be. Wonder why? Must work that one out. :@
I am too actually, and I also don't know why - I'm trying to work it out!

I'm finally getting over it though and starting to rate him (nearly) as highly as he deserves, which pleases me...

Ponting the clear no.1 for me, just as Dravid is the clear no.2. Lara just edged out Kallis and Haydos for third.

Best performer is Ponting.

Best batter imo, and my second favourite of all time to watch goes to Damien Martyn. Was always in others' shadows but was brilliant.

Should make it since 2001 IMO. Far better cut-off point.

As the dates are (IMO) wrong, I just can't resist I'm afraid... yes, that makes me even more of a **** than Smith. (H)

Worse still, I voted for Sehwag and Trescothick - and AN Other, without naming, thereby leaving the mind to wander to its own conclusion and think I voted Chris Martin...

I did consider leaving-out all 3 TBF, but it wouldn't quite have been the same. In any case, I've never denied Hayden (or Sehwag for that matter) has been one of the best batsmen going around since 2001\02, all I've ever said that being a good batsman in this timeframe isn't really indicative of much so far as the greater picture is concerned.

I think i should vote for Glenn McGrath too he improved his batting a lot after 2000, before 2000 he was averaging 2.00 (or was it 1.00 ) and by the end of his career his average was around 7 or 8 .
