Wow, Atherton just listed the top wicket taking spinners from county cricket and the list goes something like Mushtaq, Kaneria, Murali, Warne, Panesar...there are like four-five names before any English spinner, and like six-seven before any English spinner other than Panesar.

Surely the cupboard isn't that bare?

Panesar's bowling average heading to where it belongs, 35+

Next Summer how about having some pitches that actually help our own team? Panesar can go back to county cricket where he can go back to looking good against mediocrity instead of painfully average against any sort of quality, he can be an occasional pick for tours and bunsens. England should pick Flintoff + 3 seamers, get a new keeper in who can actually keep wicket and ease him with him batting down at 7/8. Hell if Rashid is good enough by then he can play at 6-8.

Mushtaq, Kaneria, Murali and Warne are all quite good tbh. Well, maybe not Kaneria.

Lol weak dismissal from Dhoni. Good ball though. Was looking forward to some pre-declaration slogging as well :(

TBH, most spinners don't do well against India. Even Warne and Murali don't have great records (in fact, they are quite bad).

But you'd think an English spinner would do better in English conditions.
Nah, not really. All those guys have played a lot of county cricket in England over the years, and they are test class bowlers. Furthermore, the fact that all of them are wristspinners is something worth noting. English pitches, particuarly at domestic level, are generally not very helpful to finger spinners - which means the list of top wicket-taking spinners is going to be packed with wrist spinners. England have got Rashid, Schofield and Salisbury - one is just a kid and the other two are obviously fairly poor. I'm sure someone like even Udal would have a much better record if the pitches suited his bowling like they probably will in Sri Lanka.

In the first two tests, the pitches were high quality and perfect for your team. Too bad the unheralded Indian seamers ran through your batsmen in your home conditions.

The only team he's done well against is West Indies, who're dire.

Poor against Australia despite a few fluke wickets (a couple to cut shots for instance) in his first Test against them. Useless against India, with some tailend slogs to keep his average in double figures. Average against Sri Lanka with one complete dust bowl which he took an eternity to take a 5-fer on helping his figures. Decent Pakistan but they didn't play him well, particularly the time Harmison rattled them.

He's not going to improve on the Test stage without some variations, look at virtually any solid, orthodox finger spinner over the past decade. Their figures often get worse as players and coaches suss them out.
