All Time Country ODI Teams ?

Bond and Hadlee opening the bowling would be a fearsome proposition, but the bowling remains too weak really. Cairns can be quite effective and Vettori is a proven spinner, but Styris and Astle would be destroyed by the likes of Richards, Bevan, Tendulkar etc.
Would Chatfield contain them a lot more and would the batsmen do as well against McGrath, Ambrose, Akram etc. Who would you drop to bring in Cairns?

New Zealand were never going to win this All Time team, so some of the players would have to get destroyed.

If you really want to know what I think, personal choice:

Turner
Astle
Twose
Crowe (c)
Styris
Cairns
McCullum (wk)
Hadlee
Vettori
Chatfield
Bond

If Fleming plays a couple of great knocks in the near future, I may have him in instead of Twose.

I know Styris had a tremendous WC but to consider him for an all-time team is a bit much imo.

I also reckon the Pakistan XI posted above would be the no.2 greatest all-time side, just behind Australia.
It would be a good contest between them and the West Indies, but I think the West Indies might come out on top.

Who would you have instead of Styris? Harris? Apart from his excellent fielding, 'Harry' was a bits and pieces player that only stood out because he was the best in a poor bunch of cricketers that filled the majority of the black caps team in the 1990s.

I probably would have Harry over Styris tbh. For the Number 5 position I might even have someone like Bevan Congdon...I know he didn't play a lot of ODI cricket but he averaged 56 and was an outstanding allround cricketer. If John R. Reid had actually had the opportunity to play OD cricket he would cruise into this side as well...but he was born in the wrong time obviously. Which begs the question... do you have the actually have played post 70s to be considered for these OD teams we pick all the time?

I would say so, otherwise it's a bit of a cop-out if players like Sobers make an alltime ODI team, when they have an average of zero in this form of the game.

Okay, Harry did win a few games for us, or more like, saved our butts a few times when we were 100/5. Don't get me wrong, he was my favourite player in the late-1990s.

But, Styris is more likely to take the game to the opposition. He has a strike rate of near 80, while Harry languished at 68, and I always got frustrated when, near the end of his NZ career, he would scratch around for the first 20 balls while the batsmen at the other end got frustrated. His bowling was effective in the late-1990s, but batsmen soon got the hang of him.

Harris is a better bowler than Styris will ever be, and not enormously worse at batting.

Harris was a fine ODI player.

Yes, he did. I wonder whatever happened to him? Why did he end his career so suddenly? Discipline problems? Injury?
