Certainly good competition, but I can't help but feel it's a bad thing for English cricket to have so many good keepers knocking on the door, surely the selectors will muck up soon and replace Prior if he has a couple of bad Tests. I mean, they need to stick with one guy for a decent length of time, something I can't see happening if there are several other keepers performing for their counties.
Probably, but one thing about the selectors over the past 8 years is consistency in selection. If a player is singled out for a position he is given an extended run & with the excpetion of Geraint Jones most have not let the selectors down. So i personally expect Prior to get a long run & hopefully he can become the real deal since i have great hopes in him based on his improved performances this summer.

To all those who doubted Somerset at the start of the season: up yours! Somerset finished their game against Northants with a bit of 20/20 action - 121 off 13.5 overs to win by 9 wickets, moving them to the top of the table with 3.5 points and a game in hand over Notts  Trescothick 69 off 42, Edwards 46 off 32.
Banger did pick up a quad injury, but Kieswetter came out as a runner and ran some fantastic 2s.
Ah, what a finish :D

Saw Mansoor Amjad bowl for Leicestershire in an older game v Kent. Looked good. Could do well in time.

Whatever was I thinking ... play abandoned for the day at Trent Bridge, but uniquely a reserve day has been arranged. Inspection at 5 pm at Bristol for Glos v Worcs.

Pity Kent didn't have a home fixture, plenty of sunshine here.

I'm a fan of Amjad but his stock seems to have dwindled of late. He has been talked about as a possible international since the year dot but his performances in the county games for Leicestershire have been extremely disappointing, especially considering the faith Tim Boon has put upon Amjad. But as you say his very young and his dismissal of van Jaarsveld either showed a great future for the kid or that Martin was rightly fully axed by South Africa, Amjad pure and simply made him look like a amateur.

Only time I've ever seen him bowl was in the Under 19 World Cup Semi in 2004 (I think), and I was very impressed with him there, but obviously he hasn't kicked on as much as Pakistan would have liked. I remember one brilliantly disguised googly to clean bowl a batsman in the death overs - probably the best use of legspin in a defensive situation I can recall.

Interesting, that side contained three spinners: Mansoor, a genuine leggie; Salman Qadir (now Sulaman according to Cricket Archive), a classic finger spinner; and Tariq Mahmood, who was the subject of a lot of fuss, bowling off breaks with a Murali-style action. The other two batted fairly high in the order as well IIRC, Mansoor was a tailender at that point.

Of the three, both Tariq and Sulaman have fairly nondescript first-class stats and only Mansoor has played at any higher level.

Durham's season is going to get a welcome injection of ability, they are currently poised to sign Shivnarine Chanderpaul (who will be making his county cricket debut) for the rest of the year.

Elsewhere Lancashire have lined up VVS Laxman as a replacement for Brad Hodge, who is returning back home to Australia in August to prepare for the 20/20 World Cup.
Daren Powell and Jerome Taylor to Hampshire and Leicestershire respectively as well.

Awesome performance from Murali but did I hear right when captain Chilton said that Murali only arrived in the UK this morning?
