PUP PUP AND AWAY - But No Burnt Bridges M for Shaun
An emotional near-capacity crowd turned out at Cymru Gurgitaters CG today to wish farewell to one of their genuine heroes. In fact, such was the out-poring of feeling, that the match itself, and the fact that this was also to be Prof/Resp Bat Sarwar Qureshi's last game for the club, almost went unnoticed. In his three and a half season's at The Gurs, Sup/Prof LHS Shaun Bridges M has laid claim to both the club record for the best career average, 13.7, as well as that for the best career economy rate, 3.54.
At the stroke of 10:30 the Two departing players led out The Gurs side-by-side, to a standing ovation from all corners of the stadium - which didn't subside until Rem/Sup LM Bewers cleaned up Qual Wrong'uns' opener, Howard, for just 11. Sup/Resp RM Wilde nipped in for another cheap wicket in his most impressive opening spell to-date, (7/2/23/1, but then it was time for Bridges M's Swan song. The stands shook when he trapped Prof Bodfish in front with a flipper for 2 in his first spell, but that was nothing compared to the seismic eruption which greeted his looped leg-break which fooled Prof Leonard for 36, to break a fifth wicket stand of 125. However, despite recapturing the guile which had deserted him for much of the season, there was to be no avalanche of wickets, as he finished his spell and his Gurs' career with figures of 10/1/36/2. Bewers however did register his fourth fivefer of the campaign, annihilating the tail to notch up 9/2/22/5.
The pursuit of Wrong'uns' modest total of 198 was a mere formality in the grander scheme of things. Qureshi was granted his personal moment with the crowd, promoted up the order to open with Greening. But, as has been the case throughout his one and a half seasons with the club, he was unable to convert a positive start into a meaningful score, nonsensically running himself out for 16, departing the stage still without a half century to his name. But even as Wond/Strong Greening's unflustered 86* (116) guided his side home with a steady hand, Bridges M in the dressingroom was far from unflustered, still unsure of where he'd be heading at stumps. Derbyshire Div V outfit Pup and Pakistan's Div III 'Damn Right I'm Pakistani' were locked in a fierce eleventh hour bidding war, which saw his eventual transfer price rise to £2.79M, almost exactly four times the previous highest Gurs' sale. Much to Bridges M's relief, the enigmatic manager Rodgie won through, so after a well-earned farewell party, he'll make the comparatively short trip up the M5 in the morning.
Vayro insists he's in no hurry to unleash his war chest, which is now believed to be in excess of £4M, but with the fans eager to kick on after three seasons of Div IV stability, and a league decider against Who's Your Daddy coming up next Friday, just how long will Vayro be able to sit on his chequebook?
