As you know some members continue to use the real name instead of the forum name, which gets confusing sometimes and annoying when you dont really know the real names of the forum members.

So what do you prefer while you are on the forum ? Real Name, Forum Name or Dasa.

My username is more or less my real (sur)name anyway, so there's no issue with me but I generally prefer usernames. It can get a bit cliquey & exclusionist when people are referred to by their real names.

Tend to use real names myself, especially when it's someone i speak to on MSN, much more personal.

Yeah, fair enough, but on a public forum I imagine it could get annoying for newbies trying to work out who's who.
Think it's been shown before that it is. Easiest way to learn CW names is to join the Dev League i reckon.

Use a mixture, tbh.

Generally use surname if that's what's generally used, first name if I talk to them semi-regularly on MSN, and forum name if I never talk to them, or I don't know their names.

And it always helps newbies to use forum names, so that's what I do when directly addressing them.

I'd rather this tendency towards real names was curbed, tbh. It serves no purpose other than to show you know something that someone else doesn't. It's not just confusing for n00bs, for example I regularly find myself wondering exactly who's being referred to half the time, and I've been posting on here for more than three years.

For some people their user name and their real life name are the same. This is particularly helpful as either works!!

Richard, for example.

Not sure there's the elitism in it that the tone in your post suggest, what is cliquey though and impossible for people to understand straight away is some of the reputations and in-jokes e.g. Fuller's obsession for thumbs.

Haha, thought that must've been the case when I saw your vote on that! :p

For me - and the other person to vote it so far - the Dasa is obviously the only option. My forum name, incredibly, is my real name! Circumstances have changed a bit since I signed-up and I've begged the boss to change it once or twice, but he's steadfastly refused as it's part of who I am on CW now. I used to be called by my full name a fair bit back then but nowadays no-one calls me it (except on here) and everyone I know remotely well just calls me Rich. I usually know I'm in trouble when someone puts a "ard" on the end.

When addressing others, I tend to use real names where I know them unless the person concerned has specifically asked me not to (eg 16toS, RIP Voltman, Fusion, np10 from now on). If I think others might not know what I'm on about and it's an ambiguous post that is open for all to reply to rather than just talking one-to-one, I try to remember to put posting-ID in brackets.

Mine is pretty much my name, and it's kind of weird when someone calls me 'andyc.' Don't really care about being called by my last name though, could take it or leave it. So, I'm undecided. But Dasa would be an awesome name for everyone.

Couldn't give a **** either way, although I suppose it could get confusing it somebody decided to call me Zac since there is another well known forum member with the same first name. Ritchie would be fine, but Perm is what quiet a few people call me in real life as well so it doesn't matter too much.

Despite the fact that i'm guilty of using peoples real names at times, i generally try to use peoples forum names unless in the Dev League forum. Whilst my forum name is pretty much my surname, i'd prefer to be known as "Clapo" instead of my real name to keep some anonymity, afterall, isn't that the whole idea of being able to choose your forum name...
