GIMH

Norwood's on Fire
I don't mind. I've been called a fair few things on here, my full username, Geraint, GIMH, Gism, GIMP, GIMPY, Martyn, Corrin, **** etc

I used to have my full name in my signature and I made a thread "Two new additions to the Corrin family" so I'm not exactly secretive about it. I did find it confusing when I first started using OT, reading all the references to Fuller, Bennett, Murphy etc. I got to know a few names when I was on the staff I guess.

As long as we don't go down the road we did on a forum I used to post on then I'm happy. It was a smaller forum, but still fairly big but was very cliquey (I was part of the clique back then, of course  ) and first names were pretty much a given across the board. Somehow though, Martyn became Martyno which then, to my displeasure, became 'Tyno, and everybody was calling me it.

Probably shouldn't have said that

Despite the fact that i'm guilty of using peoples real names at times, i generally try to use peoples forum names unless in the Dev League forum. Whilst my forum name is pretty much my surname, i'd prefer to be known as "Clapo" instead of my real name to keep some anonymity, afterall, isn't that the whole idea of being able to choose your forum name...
Had always presumed Clapo was a nickname derived from your real name, TBH.

Jungle Jumbo

International Vice-Captain
Definitely real names, unless I'm not aware of them, in which case the answer's obvious. Seems a bit wierd to be addressing people who you know by name by a username. Personally I hate mine now, can't really understand why I signed up with it, so I prefer my first name - seeming as there's only one of me here there's no problem.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. And it's even more so when that username is completely random, more so than ever when it's just a set of random letters.

 Should add a "also known as George Roberts" to your sig, then.

Or ask the boss to change your posting-ID to such. Sure as a recognition of your devotion to Bangladesh he'd be happy to. Would probably need a change of avatar, though.

Funny how so many people I know have similar thoughts, though, TBH.

Well it is really :p, but much to my surprise i've never really been Clapo anywhere apart from on forums and that's only because i have it as my user name

It really should be compulsary, IMO, for those like me whose forum names are in essence their real names to vote Dasa... don't think DB, Clapo and Pete Young should be voting for posting-ID as it's neither here nor there for them as it isn't for me, Halsey, Cameron and Dasa himself.

My point is i'd prefer to be called 'Clapo' instead of 'Kingsley' which has happened a few times.

Generally try to avoid using peoples names in CC, though rest of the forums anything goes.

Think the point, though, is to do with real-life names. Doesn't neccessarily have to be your first name. Me, I'd never dream of calling you "Kingsley", and I only rarely call Dasa "Arunava". Any posting-ID derived from any part of your name, or involving your name in whole (rare as that is - "Neil Pickup" and "Tom Halsey"), or indeed a genuine nickname like "Fiery", "Perm" or "steds", is, for me, in the need-to-vote-Dasa-on-an-issue-like-this; completely different are the likes of "The Baconator", "Jungle Jumbo", "vic_orthdox" or "FaaipDeOiad" which are totally unrelated to any name of any sort (unless Fuller's got some fancy real-life nicknames).

If I were a Mod I'd be tempted to delete this thread and replace it with one with options thus:
Prefer posting-ID
Prefer real-name
Dasa (posting-ID and real name are linked)

And that's something that genuinely intregues me. I rarely give a moment's thought to what forum I'm posting in when addressing someone.

I try to do the same as Greg TBH, when I'm in Cricket Chat then I generally used posting ID's as it seems a bit more 'official' but in the other forums it's just whatever I fancy, which is usually poster ID's anyway.

Again, though - you are Mr Wright, aren't you? And I know you're a Big Bad Mod and all, but you can't expect us rabble to be 100% deferential towards you now, can you? ;)

It's not too big a deal to me either way, but I would prefer that people use user names. Even though I've been on here for nearly two years, I still get confused when real names are used sometimes. I can only imagine the confusion for newbies.
