What the hell is that glorified Sunday League thug Alan Smith doing in the squad?
Exactly, also Nicky Shorey? FFS McClaren and why are you reselecting a guy whose going to spend next year playing Mickey Mouse football with Abel Xavier. If only FC Basel had beaten Boro the gimp would be unemployed.

Finally SWP & Parker (especially) will also feel a bit unlucky to miss out given that they is all of 6 wingers in the squad???
Why does the number of wingers make Parker unlucky?

He had his chance and was poor - so better to try others.

As for SWP - he's uber-dire.

How much of a chance did he really get?. Parker has been in the squad for the last 6 Internationals and only played for like 70-75 minutes in the Croatia shocker & hasn't even got a sub-appearance since. So given that all of 6 wingers is in this squad & a joke of a central mid-fielder for Tottenham i think Parker is definately unlucky.

Ha, fair enough as i said i guess Bentley deserves a chance.

Thing is Parker had a chance to show himself and didn't show up.

How does that make him unlucky when it's his own fault?

Don't know if anyone follows Spanish football closely but there is a huge debate going on in Spain at the moment after it has been reported Real Madrid are preparing to give Getafe a 'tax free' seven figure 'donation' if they either win at the Camp Nou or do damage to Barcelona's chances of the winning the title (injuring one of Barca's key players or getting one of them sent off).

Such a practice is 'accepted' in Spain (although, the tax man is looking into it) and has been going on for years but with the league being so tight, it does add an extra spice to the games.

Have to remember last week, Real Madrid’s neighbors Atletico de Madrid shipped in to the tune of a 0-6 home defeat to Barca. For goal difference as it stands is irrelevant due to the head to head ruling but if there is a three way tie between Barca, Real and Sevilla, then Barca thanks to those six goals would win the title handsomely by superior goal difference.

Shorey's inclusion is ok will definately give Baines a wakeup call that he needs to go to a big club next season
Why? Surely if a player needs to move to a "big club" to be picked to play for his country, which definitely appears to be the case, it is a failing of the country. Baines shouldn't have to move. McClaren should open his eyes and realise that there are players who, you know, don't play for the sides who always qualify for the Champions League.

I'm not saying he is good enough or he isn't, but imo if Baines was at, say, Liverpool, he'd have without doubt been in that squad, even if he wasn't playing too regularly.

Didn't Real actually buy Reyes though? They did the swap-loan thing but i swear Real went out and actually bought him shortly after.
Nope. Still on loan there as of now. They seem to be showing no inclination to buy either, which could be a problem for us & Jose as Arsenal don't want him back and he definitely doesn't wanna come.

If no-one from smaller clubs ever gets picked, why was Richards picked?

And going to a big club and not playing isn't going to help him out at all.

Or Shorey, Bent, Powell, Green, Johnson...
You still can't exactly say those kind of players have been picked when they deserve it though, can you? It's like he and Sven have both occasionally thought "oh, I haven't picked a player from a 'small' club for a while, better find someone to quieten down the critics". Why else would Shorey get picked when there's been at least 4 or 5 better left-backs in the country this season?

Bent didn't get picked when he was in form, then eventually did and was discarded without a second thought. Powell never should have been picked in the first place, Green hasn't exactly had many opportunities, and Andy Johnson is the Premiership's most over-rated player anyway. There's countless others who've been given token appearances (Michael Ricketts, anyone? Anthony Gardner?), when players like Scott Parker, Gareth Barry and Matt Taylor can have storming seasons and be largely ignored.
