*Official* English Football Season 2006-07

Loony BoB

International Captain
I haven't seen a huge amount of Beckham playing, but the few games I have seen (or seen bits of), he's been great, so I reckon he's probably more deserving of the spot than anyone else... but then, I haven't seen many of the games other players have been playing, either.

I do, just of recent it been an equal amount in the football threads & cricket threads i think..
fair enough just haven't seen you round much...you have A levels coming up I guess. Hope to see you back posting frequently soon :)

As for Beckham, it's all a bit too ceremonial for me. wouldn''t be surprised if the FA were nudging Steve Mclaren, wanting the superstar there for the first international @ Wembley etc

How old do you have to be to stop qualifying for under-21? Baines turned 22 in December and Nugent this month.
I'd guess the same guys that were available to qualify the team were available to play the finals. So born in 1985 or later (hence 21 in 2006, when qualifying began)

I think there's a cut-off point near the start of the season.

No doubt the injuries that Walcott and Richards have played a part in their non-selection...

TBH, they'll sell out no matter who plays - if Beckham is selected it'll be because McLaren has finally seen sense, should never have been dropped IMO.

Anyone seen England 30-man provisional Under 21 squad:

Ben Alnwick
Lee Camp
Derby County
Scott Carson
Joe Hart
Leighton Baines
Gary Cahill
Andrew Davies
Anton Ferdinand
Justin Hoyte
Matt Kilgallon
Nedum Onuoha
Liam Rosenior
Steven Taylor
Peter Whittingham
David Bentley
Lee Cattermole
Tom Huddlestone
Michael Johnson
James Milner
Mark Noble
Nigel Reo-Coker
Kieran Richardson
Wayne Routledge
Gabriel Agbonlahor
Matt Derbyshire
Leroy Lita
Luke Moore
David Nugent
James Vaughan
Ashley Young

Suprised to see Theo Walcott not in the squad, but overall even without him & Richards (even though he may not have been selected anyway) looks a very strong squad.
Odd name for a kid that.

Gareth Bale has joined Spurs but Aussie will be displeased for he was the missing link alongside Owen Hargreaves...

Don't know if anyone follows Spanish football closely but there is a huge debate going on in Spain at the moment after it has been reported Real Madrid are preparing to give Getafe a 'tax free' seven figure 'donation' if they either win at the Camp Nou or do damage to Barcelona's chances of the winning the title (injuring one of Barca's key players or getting one of them sent off).

Such a practice is 'accepted' in Spain (although, the tax man is looking into it) and has been going on for years but with the league being so tight, it does add an extra spice to the games.

Have to remember last week, Real Madrid’s neighbors Atletico de Madrid shipped in to the tune of a 0-6 home defeat to Barca. For goal difference as it stands is irrelevant due to the head to head ruling but if there is a three way tie between Barca, Real and Sevilla, then Barca thanks to those six goals would win the title handsomely by superior goal difference.

How many left backs to Spurs want to have?
By my reckoning they have coming on three to four but none of them are particularly good. Bale is only a kid but his talked upon highly enough, even if most of the talk revolves around his ability to take a free-kick.

So in other words Atletico blew the game against Barca? That how practice sounds so dodgy.

Considering Aletico could still qualify for Europe and Javier Aguirre needed a win to save his job for next year, I'm not so sure. Barcelona did turn it on and gave A. Madrid no rest bite.

However, It does seem from afar extremely dodgy for Aletico hate Real but Barcelona’s city rivals were able to separate rivalry when they faced Real a couple of weeks back and gave them one hell of scare.

Spanish football pundit Graham Hunter did not raise such a concern regarding the result. Hunter, merely waxed lyrical about the way Barcelona played whilst being critical of the ineptness of Madrid but he didn't allude to anything sinister.

Bckham has been playing very well of late, no doubt, but basically I rate Lennon higher.

McLaren was obviously a bit of a numpty making sweeping statements about Beckham not being in his plans, but he still shouldn't be playing IMO.

Never get the sense in why coaches (or should i say recent English coaches) pick these big squads. After all every 2 years we have a major championship why not pick the common FIFA requirement of 23 & look to build your best squad.

Looking at this current one i've given up on arguing on why Neville keeps getting picked but with his brother & Richards out i can live with his selection this time, Jenas why oh why, Shorey's inclusion is ok will definately give Baines a wakeup call that he needs to go to a big club next season & i guess he has reason to pick Downing now due to his performances in the B-Itl but he shouldn't be in the squad, of all the left-sided midfielders battling as Cole's backup i think Taylor is the best, his performance in Pompey's win of United this year was very impressive IMO since he should great skill & pace in that position. Finally SWP & Parker (especially) will also feel a bit unlucky to miss out given that they is all of 6 wingers in the squad??? although i guess Bentley deserves a chance.

BTW are Ash & Hargreaves injured?
