Indeed, which is depressing to say the least.

& WTF? Where was I un-calm? I never suggested you were advocating the selection, merely saying that such a selection would be ridiculous. And I repeat - no parralles can be drawn to Nixon, his being picked when he was was quite fair enough, there was a WC just a couple of months away. Now, however, it's 4 years away. Huge difference.

FFS, Brown's even older than Nixon. And Nixon was picked with a Cup around the corner, Brown will be 41 by the next one. What on Earth would be the point picking him for ODIs now? Especially given he's already a tried-and-failed case?
It's the way you phrase things. You couched it in a way that made it seem as you were disagreeing with what I said quite vehemently & by asking the question "What on Earth would be the point picking him for ODIs now?" it seemed like you'd got the impression that I was somehow suggesting Brown should be picked.

In other words, placing how above how many?

Which has never been the greatest idea.
Clearly not, as shown by the greatest county batsmen of recent times being comparative or complete failures in Tests.

Yet 2 of England's best batsmen in recent times would never have got a look-in if you pick them based on how many...

If so then I apologise. I don't tend to do things by half-measure, though. "What on Earth?" just sounds more appropriate than "What?"

And maybe I need to be a bit more picky with the fer 'k's saek.

No, most were successes - Butcher, Atherton, Hussain, Stewart, Thorpe, Vaughan, and even to an extent Ramprakash and Hick.

And with Trescothick that'd have been no bad thing. As for Vaughan, well, yes, he would have got a look-in - because since 2000 he's been scoring bucketloads of runs for Yorkshire.

Too many Kolpaks yes, but scouting, coaching etc. requires those with the skills.

Not to mention the willingness of those they're scouting for to uptake...

but Minor Counties cricket is rubbish. Just guys that have jobs that allow them to play lots of cricket. The standard is poor and shouldnt really be factored into any structural debates.

Not neccessarily - there are any number of decidedly mediocre Kolpak and EU-passport players around who do little to improve the standard but take one hell of a lot of money out of the team paying them.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld's contract must be short term for his going to Australia in July with the South African Emerging Players squad (unless VB's called an halt on his possible international career).

Well at least Tom Smith is back in the side today, though we lost the toss again and Surrey are batting first. Radio commentary not working as well
