Where does Ross Taylor rank?

I think his FC record is a result of a bit of complacency on his behalf. It was pretty obvious from an early age he was a future Black Cap and he may not have applied himself as much as someone who's path to the team was not so straight-forward. I'm confident that when given the opportunity in tests he will adjust his game and bat with more determination and application than what he has at 1st class level, where he has tended to get himself out by being over-aggressive.

Over aggression is definately one reason he hasn't been very successful in his FC career, being a young guy who is naturally aggressive is hard to restrain but Taylor needs to apply that aggression in a better manner if he wants to have a successful Test career. An average of 36 isn't that bad, but guys like Broom and Nicol are almost at 40 which is whereI feel Taylor needs to be before he "deserves" an opportunity in the Test side.

He will more than likely get to prove himself in the first half of the State Championship before NZ have another test which will be good for him, as much as I feel other people deserve a spot infront of him I really can't see Taylor missing out.

The problem is that if he was retrained for Test cricket then our most important (well most played anyway) facet of cricket in this country (ODIs) would be disadvanaged.
Matthew Sinclair and Cumming rightfully deserve to keep their spots in the Test squad IMO.

Unless he has a big World Cup and State Championship then I can't see him making the Test side really. With Cumming and How/Papps as the openers and Sinclair, Fleming and Styris all assured of their places in the middle order the only possible way for Taylor to play would be to go in with 3 specialist bowlers aswell as Oram and Styris. I can''t see Taylor replacing Sinclair, who only just come back into the side after scoring a ton of runs for CD and Scott Styris has been very impressive in his Test career so far.

I wouldn't like to see Fleming opening the batting, instead I think Michael Papps will come into the equation since Jamie How has been so disappointing in his international career so far. Putting Fleming down at #4 means Styris will go to #5 and no room for Ross Taylor unless the selectors want to go with 3 bowlers + Oram and Styris.

Well I suppose if he has a great WC it's a possibility but he wouldn't have played a test for nearly 3 years by November and it just seems like a bit of a backward step, for mine. *Mental note to self: must stop saying "for mine"*. If given the choice between him and Taylor at the moment I would think to the future and go with Taylor but as I said there's quite a lot of time and cricket to be played before our next test so ...

Neil Broom is quite good, plays for Otago and has been a solid part of their middle order for the last year or two. Seeing as how we don't get too much TV coverage of State Championship (4 day) games it is quite hard to asess how good a player actually is and what his technique is like.

Indeed a lot could happen between that time, but if I was to pick a Test side for a game tomorrow with every player available I honestly wouldn't have any room for Taylor.

Although he does have a high Test average he is a minnow-basher and once you take out his average against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe the numbers don't look so pretty and he only averages around 34. I think if it came down to a contest between McMillan and Taylor, the selectors will opt for Taylor due to the youth factor.

We only really get the finals, I was playing cricket when Otago got rolled in the List A competition and he didn't play a huge hand in the Twenty20 final. It is quite disappointing but it's to be expected really with rugby getting so much more coverage. Cricket hardly get's anything with very little in the newspaper.
