Yeah, the guy actually has something to fall back on that's worked in the past, whereas so many New Zealand players have nothing to go back to where they've been successful. Taylor averaged about 50 in this year's 4-day domestic series, with one big double hundred. He seems more technically sound after remodelling his trigger movement and stance. Give him another season, and I'd expect to see him in the Test side.

Given that Astle is gone, it wouldn't surprise if he is given a Test cap next time around. I can see it happening.

He shouldn't be though, his FC stats aren't very impressive and I would rather have someone like Jesse Ryder, Hamish Marshall or Rob Nicol bat at #5 because I think they are better options for Test cricket.

Stats can be misleading.

Ross Taylor has done the business against the best side in the world in ODIs, he can do it in the test arena. No need to over analyse the situation, he's scoring runs at a good clip so throw him in the side.

Ross Taylor should have played instead of Nathan Astle in the Sri Lankan test series, and I say that without the benefit of hindsight. Astle was never going to play another test again, and his role in the middle order was different to his role opening in ODIs. There was nothing to gain for Astle and more importantly the TEAM didn't gain anything from his inclusion.

Taylor's FC record is, by normal NZ standards, good enough to see him make the side, even if it isn't as good as his OD stats.

My hunch is we should (attempt to) make him a fixture in both the test and ODI sides asap. There might even be room for both him and Ryder in the test side atm?

Totally agree. His defense looks solid enough for me and i think he would be ideal as a no. 5 test bat for NZ

No... neither Astle nor NZ would have gained anything from a brilliant send-off and because Astle would never have played again anything that happened in that SL series wouldn't have mattered to anyone... :mellow:

While Ross Taylor has been a big success so far in the ODI arena, I still feel there are better options available for a spot in the Test side. It wouldn't have worried me if Nathan Astle missed the Sri Lankan series, as I suggested just before the series started but that doesn't mean Taylor should automatically make it into the Test side just because he is a member of the ODI team. I would prefer Jesse Ryder or Rob Nicol but both of those players seem unlikely to get the opportunity just yet.

Ross Taylor is a shoe-in for the next test match NZ plays. Gee, the NZ test selectors are hardly blessed with many talented players to chose from. He has already shown us he was more than capable of stepping up to international level in ODIs

He is a shoe-in I agree, only because the selectors think that because he's been good at ODI's he'll be good at Test's even though his FC career has been ordinary. I know how talented he is, I've watched his career closely since before he got into the Black Caps and he's been ordinary for Central Districts in the State Championship. Yes he did score a double-century earlier this season, but failed to pass 50 in any of his other innings.

Actually the NZ selectors have a few talented players to choose from but they continue making the wrong decisions and don't give those people who have earnt the opportunity the chance to play Test matches. Hopefully Bracewell quits or is sacked after the World Cup and we can have a new opinion on the selection commitee.

I think his FC record is a result of a bit of complacency on his behalf. It was pretty obvious from an early age he was a future Black Cap and he may not have applied himself as much as someone who's path to the team was not so straight-forward. I'm confident that when given the opportunity in tests he will adjust his game and bat with more determination and application than what he has at 1st class level, where he has tended to get himself out by being over-aggressive.
