First up, 5 seamers, would result in a very slow over rate.

Aus have got away with it, because pup is in gd form with the ball, and symonds has done a tidy job. Really Ponting has had to put White in, when the situation is 'safe'. He picked up one or two wickets.. tail enders trying to slog.

5 seamers is very rarely played nowadays, and whilst Australia's fast bowling options are looking awesome, a spinner is really necessary imo unless the pitch is very spin unfriendly.

With Symonds out of the side, and Watson back in the reckoning, Hogg really should get some match practice, because they can't expect him to just walk out there come wc time and do a good job.

But from a captaincy point of view, there's a need at times to slow the game down, and that is a lot harder to do if you have 5 pace bowlers, because you're behind the 8 ball for starters.

IMO "slowing the game down" often borders on the "unacceptible gamesmanship" and IMO those responsible deserve to suffer for it - I'd love to see games forfeited if overs weren't bowled in the allotted time, that'd put a stop to this nonsense slow over-rates.

There's a big difference between "slowing the game up" and bowling you're overs slowly. If you get through overs quickly enough during one stage of the innings, and then find the opposition getting a run-on, it's a perfectly intelligent and fair tactic to slow the game and regain control of the tempo of the game, as well as stifling their momentum. As long as you finish within the subscribed times, then there is no problem with it.

They are all fast bowlers, with more than a 10 step run up each. So not just medium pacers etc.

So yeh, with Brett Lee running in frm the sightscreen, Johnosno has a fairly large run up etc.

It would take a large effort to keep the over rate acceptable.

And apart from a 20/20 innings, White really hasn't shown much at international level with bat or ball.

Sure, he's a clean hitter..but so is Brett Lee...and if he was told to go out there and hit, one in every 6 innings, he'd make a quick fire 20 or 30 as well.

It is handy to have a hitter down the order, but we do have Michael Hussey, who can really hit at the end of an innings too. Add Watson into the side, and White is not required at all.

With Watson in the side, coming in for White, then Hogg should indeed play - not instead of a batsman though, but instead of Mitchell Johnson. Brad Hodge replaces Symonds.

Have you ever played cricket at any level? Honestly some of your comments are often so obviously "straight from the armchair."

Just like spinners trying to quicken the tempo of the game up, and rush batsman occurs in ODIs (best example being Jayasuriya), slowing the tempo of the game down is often a great tactic to stop the momentum of the opposition and prevent the game getting away from you. That doesn't mean you go 8-10 overs overtime or anything of the sort, in fact, over rates can quite often be mutally exclusive to slowing the tempo of a game down.

plus some batsman love the ball coming onto the bat, and so love playing the quicker bowlers.

They use the pace well etc.

Using a spinner or medium pacer, means the batsman has to force the pace, and not everyone likes that as much.

going in with the 5 seamers, means the only slow bowling options, are clarke and white. No medium pacers either (people who bowl 120km/hr )
