Stars rest for one-day warmup

Still basking in their Test match success, the Cricket Web XI will rest key players ahead of the one-day international re-match against Pakistan. The Webheads sealed an historic 2-1 series win over their hosts, and move with confidence to their preferred form of the game, where they will battle Pakistan in a 5-match series.

Captain Brendon Goff, his deputy Neil Pickup, and spinner Tom Halsey all rest out, as the ODI specialists search for game time. Newly arrived Daniel Towns, Ian Markus, Alex Crampton and Marc Robbins all come into the side. Kev Goughy and Kingsley Clapham join the team from their brief 'A' team experience in Australia, and Kyle Wright gets another chance to impress.

As in the Test series, only two specialist seam bowling spots are expected to be up for grabs, and all four seamers will play in the hope to book them. Dave Watt, however, is expected to lead the ODI attack, narrowing the competition even further to share the new ball.

In the absence of both Goff and Pickup, Wright will lead the side for the first time.

Stars line up for PCB Invitational XI

The atmosphere will be electric at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, as Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram are due to renew their partnership and take the ball against international opposition once again. The two will spearhead the PCB Invitational XI attack, with fellow internationals Shahid Nazir and Saqlain Mushtaq alongside them.

It is a star studded team and will provide some of the most difficult opposition faced by the CW XI in a practice match. Internationals Azhar Mahmood, Salman Butt, Bazid Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Imran Farhat all feature, whilst Shoaib Malik returns from injury to captain the side. Zulqarnain Haider will do the glovework.

Pakistan Cricket Board Invitational XI:
Shoaib Malik (c), Zulqarnain Haider (wk), Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Misbah-ul-Haq, Bazid Khan, Azhar Mahmood, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shahid Nazir, Saqlain Mushtaq.

CW XI in a spin against Saqlain

Saqlain Mushtaq bowled himself back into the thoughts of the Pakistan selectors, as his brilliant 10-over spell helped the PCB Invitational XI take charge after a promising start by the Cricket Web XI. Ian Markus and Daniel Towns played beautifully at the top of the order, but the middle order faltered badly, and Marc Robbins was made to combine with Kingsley Clapham in a rescue mission of sorts.

The CW XI could only reach 204 all out, however, and though early wickets to Dave Watt and late wickets to Kev Goughy kept life in the game, the hosts won by a comfortable 4 wickets. Kingsley Clapham was perhaps the most impressive bowler, as he wheeled away for 10 consecutive overs and surrendered just 22 runs. Goughy was the other revelation, and his passion and impressive pace certainly caught the collective eye of the selectors.

Cricket Web XI 204 all out (47.4 overs)
I Markus 45, DP Towns 40, MJ Robbins 27
Waqar Younis 3-35, Saqlain Mushtaq 3-38

PCB Invitational XI 205-6 (47.5 overs)
Bazid Khan 92*, Misbah-ul-Haq 52
KJ Goughy 3-33, DJ Watt 2-51

PCB Invitational XI won by 4 wickets.
Man of the Match: Saqlain Mushtaq

Disappointing loss but Towns putting some much needed runs on the board to push his case for selection in case of poor form or injury. And keep Stedman and Das waiting in the wings for a little bit longer.

Brillant bowling from Goughy and Clapham to push for selection in the first ODI, Goughy was surperb. Watt lead the attack brilliantly as well with some important wickets.

Overall a good hit out, but it would have been nice to score a few more runs and get a win.

Pleased just to be on the field with the Pakistani legends and the stars of the Development League. Taking 3 sticks at a decent economy rate and the bonus of a not out made it a great day from my perspective. :)

Shame about the loss but it was just a warmup game

Goughy set for debut cap

Under-19 fast bowler Kev Goughy is set to make his one-day international debut, after he was fast-tracked into the national team. Given the poor form of the CW XI seamers of late, Goughy will share the new ball against Pakistan's front-line at Rawalpindi. Goughy impressed with 3 wickets in the team's lone warmup fixture.

The big names return to the side, with Brendon Goff returning to the captaincy following his brief rest. Daniel Towns, Dinu DeSilva and Marc Robbins miss out on selection, whilst Kyle Wright also sits to allow Goughy's debut. Towns is 12th man.

CW XI 1st ODI squad:
BJ Goff (c), NS Pickup (vc), A Crampton (wk), CR Butler, RJ Dauth, LA Camps, AP Cloete, I Markus, TC Halsey, KJ Goughy, DJ Watt. 12th Man: DP Towns
