Indian domestic season 2006-07

NEO Sports have shot themselves in the foot by chasing rights for the ODI series. There was a fantastic opportunity for covering the domestic matches, which no one else chased. But by bidding for the ODI's, they go into a massive tussle that's also made them compromise on domestic coverage.

Now Irfan and Rakesh have eight wickets between them, four each. Mumbai are all out for 145, with Vinayak Samant scoring 66. It is surprising not to have him in the Indian side, given his superior glovework, the best in the country after Nayan Mongia. The runs he scores adds more value to his place, and has helped Mumbai very often. Definitely a lot better than Parthiv Patel and Rahul Dravid at that time.

Baroda are at 81/4 as of now.

In that other match, Karnataka are at 250/3. Bharat Chipli, promoted to open, scored 95 while regular opener Rowland scored 52. The Bengal bombers have been brought down to earth for now, but don't be surprised if they suddenly take off with a bang.

There's a detailed report on HT's cricket site. Unusually, they said this about Mumbai's dreadful start.
In Hindustan Times
Mumbai were at five wickets for no loss

In other news, India U-19 took an innings victory in the first of three tests against New Zealand U-19. Ravi Teja, Virat Kohli and Piyush Chawla all tonned up with India declaring on 499 for 8. Ishant Sharma took 5 for 55 (6 for 94 overall) in the first innings and Chawla destroyed the NZ lineup with 5 for 19 (7 for 94 overall) in the second innings.

I saw that U19 result as well. Hopefully for India's sake, this bunch of youngsters can perform both domestically and in the national side. The side that played in England last Summer was very impressive, and that was effectively a reserve side.

Whatever it takes!!!
yeah, what is even more creditable about the win is the fact that YoMahesh, one of the strike bowlers upfront, was injured and didn't bowl throughout the match. Made a good 60 odd with the bat though. Great stuff from Chawla and Ishant.

Yo Mahesh seems slightly overrated tbh. Abu Nechim has generally outperformed him but hasn't gotten the same recognition. Ishant has certainly been very impressive though and it's great to see Chawla take big wickets after a dismal domestic season.

well, I have never seen him, and I hate to just keep judging people on numbers alone. But my point, in any case, was that the result was all the more creditable because one of our specialist bowlers was injured and the others still managed to win the game, even though NZ were actually following on, which meant more load on these bowlers.

Both Yo Mahesh and Abu Nachim are over-rated. Yes, they've been getting wickets, but we don't know too much about them. They may be seam/swing bowlers who are only medium-pace, but there are many such in India with superior records and performances. Come to think of it, they may (think Agarkar and Harvinder Singh) even be undersized! Ishant, on the other hand, has rattled the big guns of Ranji and if you've seen him in action, you'd agree he's the right raw material for a strike seamer. He may not be a tearaway, but he's very tall and uses whatever pace he's got to very good effect. Definitely, an India prospect after the World Cup.

Ishant Sharma is definitely a better prospect than either of those two. Taking 29 wickets in 6 matches at 20 apiece in your debut FC season is quite impressive, especially considering some of the flat tracks Delhi laid out. He should get some action for India A as soon as possible but I'm not sure when the next A-level tournament is.

Bengal are cruising against Karnataka: 244-3 at tea, with 63 more required and the first-innings lead in the bag. Manoj Tiwary is unbeaten on 110, Rohan Gavaskar has 12.

I haven't seen such a strong Bengal side in a long time. The Das opening pair is decent, the middle-order is packed with Jhunjhunwala, Gavaskar, Tiwary and Dasgupta.
Then you've got Shukla, a few dangerous seamers and a handy spinner in Lahiri. Assuming Bengal take this one, we should have a great final on our hands.

Bengal have already made it to the finals, chasing a total of 307 in the final innings. With Ganguly coming back, this will look very strong. It's disappointing, that Sanyal left for Railways, because he was doing reasonably well as an all-rounder and a support seamer. The youngsters, especially Manoj Tiwari, have had a major share in this team's performance. Manoj averaegs over 50, and he's also played as a leg-spinner in the past, before his Ranji debut.

The one standout performer for Bengal is seamer Ranadeb Bose. With the more accurate and long-lasting Shib Shankar Paul out due to injury, Bose has led from the front as a striker and taken wickets in bucketfuls, especially in the matches that mattered. He's had good support from Saurav Sarkar and change seamer Ashok Dinda has had some fantastic matches so far. Spinner Sourashish Lahiri hasn't been outstanding but he's got a few wickets and the other spinner, a youngster, has also done well in the few matches he got.

The batting has looked very strong, even without Ganguly in it. Manoj Tiwari has scored a double century and one over 150 in this season, and has been in great form. Avishek Jhunjhunwala also has scored more than a few runs. Opening the innings has been an area of concern this time. As for Ganguly, he's socred big, and interestingly, scored quick in his last outing. Since he's in the running for ODI opener, he can also consider opening in the longer form of the game, so that's worth a try here. No better time to try it out than against Zaheer and Agarkar.

Fielding, as always, is a problem area. Bengal is not a strong fielding side, unlike the present Mumbai unit. None of the senior players are known to be effective on the field. It may just get found out here. Lack of versatility is another problem. None of the bowlers can score runs, and that's a well-known fact. However, even the batsmen who can contribute a lot by bowling long stocks of overs are going off after just one or two, which is a problem. They can't rely on their strikers all the time. It was sad to read of Bose bowling 50 overs in an innings, while the batsmen had a little over 20 between them.

Their opposition, Mumbai, have every area covered well. They've been bowling well as a unit, with effective fielding support. The batting, once an area of concern, is finally coming together. They've got history on their side, but Bengal have pinched a lead against them in this very season.

How much does that show about the neglect of the Ranji Trophy, caused by the BCCI or not?
A lot actually. I wish our stars played a lot more. But the fact is that its not even televised, and you can't find it on radio. So how would the fans connect to their teams?

Precisely. The fact that you'd prefer to support one player than a whole team indicates the sad state of affairs. Not you're fault at all. I guess living in the USA doesn't help as you've got no real connection to a certain state.

Well I'm from Baroda so I support them. But Mumbai beat them in the semi finals, so I'm pretty much supporting anyone but Mumbai in the finals ;).

I hope they all play. Jaffer, Sharma, Tendulkar, Muzumdar, Zaheer, Agarkar, Powar, Jhunjhunwala, Ganguly, Gavaskar, Tiwary, Bose. That would be an awesome final.
