Fair point. Lewis and Anderson bowling long spells here. Flintoff obviously realises this one isn't going to the death, either bowl them out or lose. If he comes on and bowls well, it really is game on IMO.

So, why was Panesar dropped? Have missed our bowling thus far in this series, so don't know how good he's been? Opinions?

They're still long spells though, and I'd like to have seen Fred on by now. He is our best bowler, and you'd want him to have a dart at these two before they're set. But a good effort by the openers, which makes a change after what we've seen in the last 12 months.

One more wicket and this one is very much alive. Obviously White can bat and the tail aren't too bad as bowlers go, but certainly 5 down with 100 odd still needed would add plenty of excitement.

Chance for Hussey to do a Bevan here. A successful chase is basically the only sort of ODI innings he hasn't played so far, largely due to a lack of chances with the team in trouble.

Is Flintoff England's best bowler and best batter in the side at the moment? Would that be the general consensus in England do you think?

Without KP, definitely.

KP is more consistent batsman that Freddie in both forms, both are equally as destructive as each other when in form. Freddie is more orthodox than KP though.

England have lost control of this a little, we needed to get down to 6 down in that little rattle of wickets.

Just realistic mate. And, tbf, a suitably grumpy response to waking up to this particular nonperformance. Anyway, apart from Loye, what postives would you take from today's "batting"?
True.

But you would hardly be surprised by this effort. That said they have come back well with the ball and it could be interesting. If England do win it, then that is one helluva comeback.

Sounds like England's batting was completely useless again. People blame England's bowling but the bowling generally does the best of what's there (which is sometimes not a lot unfortunately) whereas the batting massively underperforms again and again. There was a list of shocking statistics of England's batting totals being read out from a paper during England's game against NZ, I'll let someone else find them and show how bad they are.

The batting's definitely let us down here. Obviously if we'd put up a total of any worth, we'd expect Aus's approach to be different, but nonetheless, it sounds like we are bowling quite well, and it will be the batsman who have cost us this match when Australia win it.

You're right, he has had 4 not outs batting 2nd but his highest score is 36*. Interesting that of the 50 games he has played, Aussie have batting first in 32 and second only 18 so he hasn't had a lot of opportunities yet.

..................I...Runs..HS.Ave.100.50
1st innings 29 1228 109* 87.71 1 9
2nd innings 9 ..180... 36* 36.00 0 0

Yes, but Aus usually find someone to see them home, so odds are still hugely in their favour imo. As you say though, the bowling looks more impressive. Helps that there isn't an Ali, Harmison, Bresnan, Plunkett or Mahmood insight, of course.

As for the early morning grump, moaning at CW is preferable to shouting at the kids, so it's what I do. Was I surprised? Yeah, a bit. You always hope the batting will stand up for once, whatever the evidence to the contrary. Of course I know the sort of stats that Scaly mentioned: that the batting's been feeble since our summer of 2004. But blind optimism/stupidity (delete as appropriate) kicks in every time. Daft really.

Clark'e such a great ODI cricket. Often overshadowed by Gilly, Hussey and Ponting, but he's right up there.
