Actually the required run rate only just went over 7 per over and given the rate at runs were scored in the game it wasn't exactly panic stations at that point. He struggled against good quick bowling - no need for explanations there really.
Oh yes, he struck Mitchell Johnson for 3 fours in one over, and took Stuart Clark apart. He really struggled against the quicks. 8-)

Like when he +hit 3 boundaries in 1 over off Mitch Johnson, one through the covers and two pull shots over mid-wicket?

Press Release from Radio sport NZ:

Black Cap Shane Bond has been cleared of a stress fracture in his back and will stay with the team in Australia.

The star paceman's seen a sports physician in Sydney this morning after he hurt his back during New Zealand's loss to England in Hobart.

Bond then had an MRI scan and while the results have not been fully revealed Black Cap management can confirm he doesn't have a stress fracture as first feared.

The Blackcaps are currently training in Sydney while Bond rests at the team hotel.

Bond will undergo physio and pool work over the next few days.

Blackcap management say they'll assess him on a day by day basis and are yet to make a call on his participation in Sunday's Tri-Series game against Australia.

No stress fracture

That's great news. Though they should rest hm for the next few games, even if he feels fine. The WC is much more important.

Cumming to open?

I see that Craig Cumming hit 46 today, to go with his two hundreds in the past weeks. He's in the best limited overs form of his career, and the BCs need an opener. He also played adequately in the tests against SL, which probably boosted his confidence. I hope they give him a chance to fill the biggest hole in our ODI team.

Yes, I'm aware he has a terrible ODI record, but at the time he hadn't even scored a limited overs century; he was thrown in to the OD team as one of Bracewell's hare-brained schemes, totally unready for the challenge. I think he may be ready this time.

McCullum's had his turn at the top and failed to impress. Send him back down the order so we can release that waste of space - Craig McMillan. This would allow Fleming to bat at three, rather than be promoted to replace McCullum.

Not a silly idea re Cumming. I'm gutted the McCullum experiment has failed so miserably. I really thought he was going to fire this series but at least we know how handy he can be down the order. It's not all doom and gloom though, the return of the 3 injured players will make a big difference. Then we can discard guys like Adams, Franklin and McMillan who are liabilities at the moment

We've had a history of trying openers that have failed. It's no real surprise McCullum failed. Add him to the list.

Unsurprisingly, players generally don't perform well when they've never played a position even at the domestic level.

Pick a player in form? Pick a player... gasp... in the position he plays domestically? You've lost it!

I don't think they'd pick Cumming, but it's a much better option than McCullum. I guess the other point to dropping McCullum down the order is who would replace him? Fleming is out of sorts, although surely he'd be the best option. But then we're opening with our two best batsmen, and leaving our middle order with a lot of inexperienced players.

Vincent was promising, but he seems out of form. Ryder... not convinced about him yet in one-day games. Sinclair? Doesn't seem in form, and he's better suited to 4. No one is coming to mind. Thoughts?

What else did you see today Will? Did you also see that Oram hit a run a ball 70, with the majority of his runs singles or twos. Did you also see that Oram has taken 2 wickets so far. If Oram is "over-rated" and Cumming is the next best option for the Black Caps, why has Cumming scored less than Oram in the match.

Someone might think you are questioning the rationale behind Bracewell and the other selectors' thinking.

I just don't see any realistic options, either within the current squad or in domestic cricket - other than Cumming. And I never thought I'd be saying that, but his form can't be ignored when the BC plight is so dire.

Guess what? I did notice that. Hey, I'm not unhappy with Oram's efforts today, but that's only one match. Let's hope he continues in that form though.

However, our opening - well the top order in general - is our biggest concern. Oram is not the man for that job. It does put him in line to push for #6 or #7 allrounder role though. And Cumming has performed in nearly every match.

i think if nz put fleming and astle at the top order they will be good enough 2 score runs over this series and then into the world cup. with taylor in at 3 and fulton at 4 one of them is always gonna score runs once we get out of this rutt..and mccullum is much better in at 6 or 7. hes a late order specialist. i also think jesse ryder will be the future of the nz top order

I'd like to think Fleming is the right person to open with Astle but he's be shown up by McGrath, Lee, and Vass on so many occasions in the early overs it is not worth trying him again. And I thought he looked terribly out of form against Australia, scratching around, trying to play the say leg-side shot to every ball.

However, I'd like to be proven wrong.

Mal Loye or Ravi Bopara? Technically, I would prefer to have Ravi in the team, but I also think you need to get at the Australians, and attack them. Mal Loye would almost be perfect for it

Loyes a certainty to play I'd of thought, you don't pick a 34 year old for the experience. If Bopara gets the nod, it would be ahead of Joyce IMO. I'd consider it myself, but if they rate Joyce they should give him another go after a run-out.

seen a lot of Loye, definately deserves to be in the squad, but a lot of blokes have been hyping up his call up too much IMO, i.e saying he should have been in the side all along etc which is a bit over the top for me especially if he doesn't get off to the best start whenever he plays. People will then go on to say that he is another county bully..
