Holy crap @ Beckham's wage of just under £500k a week at LA Galaxy

Absolutely obscene money for a guy who can kick the ball with one foot reasonably well if you give him all day.
I don't think he will be able to last the 5 years out tbh

It might seem like a lot of money but it'll be a good bit of business for the MLS as he will sky-rocket their viewer numbers at least for the first season. It'll also bring him closer to Asia where he is considered a god so I can imagine the MLS will pick up good tv deals through-out Asia.

The MLS did it to boost their profile and maybe to open up a door for other big name European and South American players to sign up as well.

He doesn't need to. One year would still be insane amounts of money. I saw on another forum that he will get £70,200 a day, at £50 a minute:-O
He has a contract for 5 years and i havn't heard anywhere that he has a get out clause or whatever they call it.

That's why Beckenbauer and the like went over i guess.
Who? I don't really follow soccer, and I probably won't go to more than one Glaxy game. I just want to see him take a free kick in real life. I've seen a few videos of his free kicks and they are out of this world!

Turns out there's a salary cap of US$1.9m over there, so even with marketing and sponsorship, it's a struggle to see how they can generate that much cash.

EDIT: More research and I find out that "David Beckham doesn't count" with regards to the salary cap. That's a very weird salary cap policy, but okay.

How are MLS affording this? £500k a week is insane if it's true.
From what I understand AEG are the primary investors, with a large chunk coming from adidas and the rest from MLS.

MLS $400,000 a year

Adidas and AEG split the remainder of the $37.6 million a year

That is if you believe some figures

$40-$50 million a year. Good luck to him.

Interesting

MLS Wages said:
Previously, Chivas USA's Juan Francisco Palencia was MLS' top earner, guaranteed $1.36 million a year.

The average player in MLS earns far less: Columbus keeper Bill Gaudette took home just $11,700 last year and the median is around $36,000.

The players must really love the game over there with what regards to what they earn per year because their are probably plenty of jobs out there where they would earn far more. Italy coach Roberto Dondoni who has played in the States has his doubts: http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jan12q.html

Anyway it seems Newcastle are looking at taking Italian u-21 and Inter centreback Marco Andreolli on loan as well as Torino (more likely destination) and Marseille, perhaps that Sven Goran Eriksson is likely to take over at OM would encourage him to move there if an offer came in.

Watched the game on tape today and surely Liverpool need to get rid of Sami Hyypia and I'm not sold on Gabriel Paletta as well. Still he is young and will get more experience. They really need somebody like Lucas Neill and perhaps give Blackburn some players on loan for the rest of the year.

As for Arsenal and seeing how Jérémie Aliadière played, why doesn't he get more games and hopefully he gets some more in the future because he did everything that was asked for him, and if that doesn't warrent more game time, what else must he do?

He's been poor in every other game he's played in for the Gunners that I've watched.

Anyone else think that if Birmingham get a fine or even a points deduction for the pitch issue it'll be a farce?

As Clutey says, he's not very good really. Decent athlete, but misses too many chances & lacks spatial awareness. Every dog has his day tho & he made Paletta (aonther Argentine in England success story in the making, obviously...) look a bit silly, but he's nowhere near Van Persie or Adebayor in terms of quality. I'm sure if anyone came in with anything approaching a reasonable offer he'd be off. Suffice to say offers won't be coming from West Ham, Wolves, Celtic or anywhere else he's been on loan.

Are you saying they should or shouldn't get one?
