Cheers PY, competing with Mr Pickup, but he hasn't made an entry for ages
Is it my fault that I'm stuck in a cricketless vacuum and don't have a back garden the size of half of Cheshire?

My season actually started today- I was called by Upottery after my last post. We played Kenn, at Upottery. It was a gloomy and overcast day but it only spattered with rain briefly.

Our team was very weak thanks to a great deal of injuries amongst senior players. We bowled first, as the pitch was wet and very green, and Kenn scored 221. I bowled three overs, 1-17, though I did not bowl very well. Our pitch is on a pronounced slope and for once I was bowling from the end that favours offspin, going down the hill, so that was a help- aim it a long way outside off stump, and it'll come back down the hill to threaten the stumps. I did not deserve the wicket. I'd like to say I deliberately beat the guy in the flight, but I have no idea where the ball is going once I have released it, and this one delivery happened to pitch full and just outside off, the guy prodded at it, it didn't bounce and it went under his bat, hit his boot, and rolled onto the stumps. I was as surprised as he was.
I also ran out another batsman, but only because he slipped. If you think that is ungentlemanly, I did not take the bails off.

I opened the batting, but only scored 7. I found the pitch very slow and somewhat difficult to adapt to after the hard indoor net strips in Norwich, but I hit a couple of good shots. However I failed to pick a slower delivery and lobbed a catch back to bowler, just on the verge of being able to attack more. I feel the alterations to my technique I made in Norwich certainly helped.

We ended on 188-8 (with only ten players). We were always behind the run rate, and only got so close thanks to my opening partner Smithy's 85. We were missing our whole fist choice top order (as well as much of the second choice) so it's not entirely surprising. Next stop, Old Chelmsfordians with Hutton Vs.

My back garden is small, we only have enough space for 15yds (of which half is concrete) and can't play anything beyond a forward defensive in case we break the windows.

Pretty good first game, in our second league where we're experimenting a bit more. Didn't keep, opened and made a fairly quick 21 with three fours to the short boundary.

We were cruising with the ball, so I got an over, which seeing as it went for 16 may well be my last. We still won, they forfeited due to bad light when they needed 12 an over and we brought our fastest bowler on.

Good effort Bacon. :)

I'm missing out on training tomorrow for my grandad's funeral - could jeopardise my chances at an SUCC debut on Sunday, but such is life. Still, gotta keep hoping I'll get a game. :)

Good luck mate. :)

As it turns out, I was a long, long way from selection for the SUCC 3rds on Sunday, which was a tad disappointing - but I've just been given the green light by the club captain to start up a 4th XI to play friendlies. With any luck we could have a game between an SUCC 4th XI (captained by me) and an EUCC 4th XI (captained by Neil). :D

First school game tomorrow, and we have a few problems:

a) 10 players
b) No keeper
c) Five bowlers
d) Five batsmen... all of whom are bowling save one who is keeping

Cheers. :) We'll have no problem getting a side out I can assure you - I reckon we could make a 5ths if we really pushed for it. Transport is going to be an issue, but I think a few of us have cars.

Looking forward to captaining a side again - difference this time is that I don't really know many of them that well. It'll be a nice challenge. :)
