Nah uncle, get your old ass on outta here.
We done with the (19)20s!
Even if you believe he's from a little too far back into the past and wasn't tested to the same levels as guys from Hutton's era and since, which I'm somewhat on the fence about, and for me he's right on the fringe of that line... You can't compare him to, Shakib was it?

So while you may have a valid point, you invalidate it by, as usual, going too far.

For me, if I'm choosing a squad, I will start with Hobbs and Barry, with Hutton there if it goes to **** and he's needed to shore up the ship if Hobbs struggles.

But thread is not picking a squad and your Barry has hardly any votes. I guess your logic is wrong

I was speaking to how Hobbs is perceived.

And yes, I'm aware how many votes Barry has, didn't expect him to win.

Barry for me is the same as many view Imran. He brings aggression at the top and was an excellent slip fielder. Analogous to how Imran provided reverse swing and added his lower order batting to the equation.
Where Barry solidifies it though is that he had the highest peer ratings of any modern opening batsman and up there with Hutton and Hobbs.

The hesitancy here is also understandable because of his limited test experience, but between what he did in WSC, in comparison to Sir Gordon at Hampshire, and in every opportunity he got, in conjunction to what we're told by commentators like Mark Nicholas, and posters like @fredfertang and @peterhrt I'm confident he was up there with the greatest ever.
That's good enough for me.

The conditions being tested for don't really matter.

Modern batsmen, if given an opportunity to have some practice sessions in those conditions (presumably stickies being the most treacherous in question), will end up performing as well or better than Hobbs against the bowling opposition he faced. Those bowlers of the past simply were of a lower standard, and didn't use appropriate approaches and techniques to trouble modern bats, like it or not.
And past batsmen, given the opportunity to utilise everything the modern era has to offer (video footage of other players, improved training, basically every pitch being considered a flat pitch by them) would also end up doing just as well as modern day batsmen.

Back on track, I can make an argument that the openers shouldn't only compliment each other, but also take into account the guys below them... And following that line of logic, that Hutton would be an ideal anchor, especially with Barry opening with him.
