Worst Test XI from your country

Athlai

Not Terrible
Ken James was a wicket keeper who batted at 7-8 for NZ in the 30s, played 11 matches and managed to average 4.72 with a HS of 14.

Disappointed at the lack of love for Kuggelejin.

I don't know if you had noticed, but the thread title isn't "Worst Test XI made up of guys who were quality domestic players and didn't go terrible in ODI stints from your country".
Yes, but Blair Pocock and Marshall have similarly **** records to Papps and are worse at the domestic level, hence they suck more.

Stop me, oh-oh-oh stop me, stop me if you think that you've seen this thread before....

Not sure that I have though. So here goes. As an Englishman, this has been something of a golden age for Worst XIs, so I don't even need to go beyond the 80s and 90s.

1. John Stephenson
2. Darren Maddy
3. Usman Afzaal
4. Adam Hollioake
5. Aftab Habib
6. Chris Cowdrey (c)
7. Steve Rhodes (w)

3,4,5 has always been standard if not good or great for us.

Might be tempted to include Rogers for Hughes in your line up. Fine FC batsman, obvz, but 19 runs in 2 innings at test level speaks for itself.
Are you joking?

Bradman also scored 19 runs from his first 2 innings. You cannot possibly judge Rogers solely on that...

3 stars of the Aussie 1981 Ashes squad must surely make the Worst Crim XI:

For the openers,

Johnny Dyson: Played no fewer than 30 matches, and scored his runs at an average of 26 and a Tavaré-esque strike rate of 33.

And Graeme Wood to open with him, 59 matches and an average of 31.

And in the, er, all-rounder's role, a man who didn't get a bowl in any of his 3 Tests and therefore who must have played as a specialist batsman, but who averaged 29 with the bat in FC cricket (and 15 in Tests). Although TBF he was famed for his canny and unorthodox bowling in ODIs. The great Trevor Chappell.

Agarkar was never a good enough bowler at test level, but he hardly deserves to be in the worst team of all time. He helped us win a test match in Australia after all. Considering the number of tests India have won in Australia, that is not to be scoffed at.

West Indies?

Travis Dowlin
Floyd Reifer
Stuart Williams
Lincoln Roberts
Dave Joseph
Sylvester Joseph
Andre Fletcher (keeper)
Rawl Lewis
Adam Sanford
Kerry Jeremy
Dwight Washington
Pretty good....

But to be fair, Roberts and Washington only played one Test each, while Jeremy and Fletcher just played limited overs cricket, and Dowlin's average of 31 was sadly surpassed....

How about this?

1) Stuart Williams
2) Sieunarine Chattergoon
3) Darren Ganga
4) Floyd Reifer
5) Dave Joseph
6) Sylvester Joseph
7) David Williams (wk)
8) Rawl Lewis
9) Darren Powell
10) Adam Sanford
11) Inshan Ali

AWTA. Replace Agarkar with David Johnson.

While his talent did appear limited there is no way he's one of the 6 worst Windies test batsmen. Even of the past decade.

True, indeed. Let me give it a shot!
7) Sameer Dighe (+)

I'm one of his biggest fans but MSK Prasad is the worst wicketkeeper batsman I have ever seen. Has to be captain coach of the Indian side. Him facing Brett Lee was heart in mouth hoping he didn't die stuff.

So much to choose from....
7. Lee Germon (c)
I don't know how Germon can make the team ahead of Robbie Hart, especially considering Hart kept Nevin out of the team at the time.

Hart was a very tidy glovesman, unlike Nevin during his time and unlike Germon who was the ultimate coach-bitch who could slog a bit, but was nothing useful with the gloves. And he's the perfect skipper for this side.

Anyone who thinks Phil Hughes or Chris Rogers is a candidate for the worst all time Australian XI is absolutely kidding themselves. The two blokes Zaremba named are easily worse, and tbh there are even worse ones than them. Dyson was a strange fella. Had a very mediocre record, yet he played some decent knocks against the Windies and England attacks of his era.

Wood's record is virtually on a par, but one has to remember he as often as not compounded his own mediocrity by running one or two of his partners out before being caught in the slips for less than 20. Same for Rick Darling.

Hughes only made my XI as I used post-1990 debuts as the cut off, and since then we haven't picked a second terrible opener. Came down to him or Blewett...

Dyson's SCG and Leeds tons were two of the best in the early 80's. Wood's ton in 1988 at Perth vs WI was pretty gutsy too, but take out those good knocks and they both have average careers. Wood obviously scored more tons, but gee if he played in this era people would destroy his technique, people think Phil Hughes looks ordinary.....

Still laughing at my middle order of Kerr, Carlson and Laughlin and Wright. Dear god thats bad. Wally Edwards could be the worst opener ive ever seen in test cricket.

Not bad. A bit tough on GoJo, perhaps, but his keeping was pretty atrocious in England colours.

Tough on Mike Smith, who was a quality bowler. McCague should be in the XI instead of him for sure. Failed over 3 tests (instead of one) and was basically picked because (a) He was a decent pinch-hitter in ODers (!) and (b) Because he was Strayan.
