The one that springs to mind as a guess is Denis Compton, but I don't think he was playing that late?

Not him. In fact he never won a full cap for England, although he appeared in wartime internationals.With somehow satisfying circularity his bro Leslie has a full football cap, but never played tests.

So it's got to be English or South African then I think, and SA have only gone in recent times, so it won't be one of them.
