Zimbabwe Toss Away Initiative
Stratton and Dawson Heroes In Karachi
from Prudence Etambanadzo in the subcontinent
Innocent Chinyoka and Sean Ervine served up a menacing opening spell of fast bowling for Zimbabwe, but the back-up bowlers failed to take advantage and the promising start all went awry. Dawn was caught behind in the third over, as Chinyoka's tactic of outswingers outside off finally found the edge, and after a 35-run partnership between Beasley and Smith, Ervine struck with a lovely quick delivery that hit Smith's toe - lbw for 11. Three more wickets fell for 11 runs, and Zimbabwe looked up at the scoreboard to see an encouraging 52 for 5.
Then the wheels fell off. Dawson and Stratton played the spinner Dabengwa cautiously, and Dabengwa hardly threatened to take wickets, while captain Goodwin failed to take advantage of the situation and attack. The pair eased to half-centuries, and as Shreck and Mpofu served up a galore of attempted yorkers that turned into beamers and full tosses, both managed to reach 101 before the 50 overs were up, as Australia closed on 261 for 5.
The medium-pace of Jon Moss was tricky to negotiate, and Goodwin dragged an inswinger from Moss onto his own stumps for 0 in the very first over. However, healthy scores from Chris Ervine, Justice Aston and Ellington Durrant put Zimbabwe into a good chasing position at 197 for 5. Shane Harwood broke through Durrant's defenses, however, inducing a leg-side edge that Dawson took with an athletic dive, but Sean Ervine and Keith Dabengwa kept up with the run rate. However, Ervine was out to medium-pace all-rounder Stratton, Chinyoka was frustrated by Harwood, and attempting a massive slog Chinyoka strode several feet down the pitch and was easily stumped by the stellar Dawson. That was the end - Dabengwa couldn't quite pull off the big hits required, and Shreck and Mpofu wilted with the bat, as Zimbabwe went down by 14 runs.
All in all an encouraging performance against the World Champions.
