Zimbabwe Toss Away Initiative
Stratton and Dawson Heroes In Karachi

from Prudence Etambanadzo in the subcontinent

Innocent Chinyoka and Sean Ervine served up a menacing opening spell of fast bowling for Zimbabwe, but the back-up bowlers failed to take advantage and the promising start all went awry. Dawn was caught behind in the third over, as Chinyoka's tactic of outswingers outside off finally found the edge, and after a 35-run partnership between Beasley and Smith, Ervine struck with a lovely quick delivery that hit Smith's toe - lbw for 11. Three more wickets fell for 11 runs, and Zimbabwe looked up at the scoreboard to see an encouraging 52 for 5.

Then the wheels fell off. Dawson and Stratton played the spinner Dabengwa cautiously, and Dabengwa hardly threatened to take wickets, while captain Goodwin failed to take advantage of the situation and attack. The pair eased to half-centuries, and as Shreck and Mpofu served up a galore of attempted yorkers that turned into beamers and full tosses, both managed to reach 101 before the 50 overs were up, as Australia closed on 261 for 5.

The medium-pace of Jon Moss was tricky to negotiate, and Goodwin dragged an inswinger from Moss onto his own stumps for 0 in the very first over. However, healthy scores from Chris Ervine, Justice Aston and Ellington Durrant put Zimbabwe into a good chasing position at 197 for 5. Shane Harwood broke through Durrant's defenses, however, inducing a leg-side edge that Dawson took with an athletic dive, but Sean Ervine and Keith Dabengwa kept up with the run rate. However, Ervine was out to medium-pace all-rounder Stratton, Chinyoka was frustrated by Harwood, and attempting a massive slog Chinyoka strode several feet down the pitch and was easily stumped by the stellar Dawson. That was the end - Dabengwa couldn't quite pull off the big hits required, and Shreck and Mpofu wilted with the bat, as Zimbabwe went down by 14 runs.

All in all an encouraging performance against the World Champions.

As co-manager of South Africa, let me just say how disappointed I am at the loss of Funston and de Villiers, both of whom are out for 5 weeks.

Im sure Ian will agree the Y Snow needs to be called off the replacement list at this point...i'm happy I put him there :D

New Zealand crush England

New Zealand continued their solid start to the WCC world, with a 102 run thrashing of England, which will surely secure their spot in the final 6, as they now remain the only unbeaten side in Group B. "The team was just excellent today. I must admit, I'm extremely proud of the boys. However, the World Cup is not won in the first two matches. There is still work to be done" expressed manager Kurt Christensen, who showed no signs of complacency after his sides strong start.

England just couldn't compete and were behind the eight ball for most of the match. Gow and Holland struck half centuries that guided the kiwis through 267. Before Bond tore through England taking 6/34, as England were rolled for 165.

NZ 4 Points
India 2
Eng 2
West Indies 0

Farq's Fatal slip up

After having had one of the best WCC careers of any players, Farq Funston is now in deep disciplinary trouble. The young Province batsman has made mountains of runs over the last 2 seasons and has been a major cog in Western Province's 4 day success. It also seemed that he had cemented a spot in the South African middle order for the test series against Zimbabwe.

However police reports and a press release today released by Slats4ever put a massive black mark against his name. Following the side's first round win (which Funston didn't take part in) the South African team headed out on a bonding golf trip the next day. Competition was fierce however Andy DeVilliers and Farq Funston had established an early lead and held onto it till the 18th hole. Farq then had a putt to win the team competition and finish at even par. However the putt missed, and he missed the one coming back to, which handed DeVilliers the team competition. Clearly agitated Farq then swung his putter and hit DeVilliers in the middle of the back, sending him to the floor.

Police have decided not to press charges against Farq however the South African Cricket Board supported and accepted the 5 week ban handed down by the WCC board. The ban assures that Farq will miss all of the World Cup and most of the Test Series. Star wicketkeeper batsman DeVilliers also was severely hampered by the incident as physios ruled the keeper out from taking any more part in the World Cup.

Slats4ever today backed Guy's decision to bring Y Snow into the South African Squad and also to bring in Van Jaarsveld who could be a bolter for the test team.

Pakistan Managers:

Really sorry to all WCC International Managers for not submitting a side for round 2 of the WC. I have my reasons and i have told Blewy them in the WCC Staff area. For all you guys that cant acess that area my reasoning was about not being home for the alst two days due to football commitments. I can assure you that all of that is over know and if i and cbuts are keeping the job all teams will be submitted from know on.

As for the game good to see some guys getting runs under their belts. A decent win although im angry at myself for not submmiting.

South Africa bundle out Zimbabwe for an easy win

After a very encouraging performance against Australia last game, Zimbabwe were going into this game expecting an equally strong show against South Africa. Things, however, started going against Zimbabwe from the start as they lost the toss and were sent in by an enthusiastic South African side.

Goodwin and Petal again failed to put on any kind of an opening partnership, with Goodwin trapped plumb in front for 5 by Charl Langeveldt, and Nelson followed this up with no addition to the score, A Petal lbw for 5. 2/11 became 3/11 with Carver out for a duck off Nelson, and Langeveldt polished off C Ervine's middle stump, leaving them flailing on 4/17. Thankfully for Zimbabwe, Aston and Durrant, fresh from their excellent batting efforts against Australia, put on 101 runs to put them back in contention. By the time Nelson had Aston caught he had made 59 off only 66 balls and the score was a much more respectable 5/118. Unfortunately the tail offered no support with 4 out of the last 5 batsmen dismissed for ducks as Nelson took 6 wickets for 35 to polish Zimbabwe off for 151, leaving Durrant on 56*.

Defending 151 was always going to be hard, but Shreck got Zimbabwe off to a good start and instilled some hope in the struggling team, with Tweedie out lbw for only 3. The next wicket took 66 runs to fall, however, as with Arlott and Llewellyn combining in a blistering partnership. Arlott was eventually out lbw to Ervine for a fast-paced 42 off 33 balls, and Mpofu had Llewellyn caught for 39. Mpofu claimed another quick wicket with Cook for 7, but by 4/95 it was looking grim. When spinner Dabengwa had Snow for 12, making the score 5/105, South Africa's grip on the game seeemd to be loosening. Andrews and Halse, however, somewhat irresponsibly blasted their way to victory, with Halse's 26* off 15 mainly coming off Dabengwa, who's three overs went for 23. One ball that Halse absolutely carted hit an unaware C Ervine right on the forehead. Ervine was rushed off the field and x-rays later revealed a small breakage in his skull. Andrews also made 26* and in the end, South Africa coasted home with 5/155, leaving the Zimbabwe managers contemplating change for their next match against Pakistan.

two rounds of group play to go. super 6, imho, will comprise of:
australia
south africa
pakistan
india
new zealand
england

nz and australia are probably the only dead certs at this stage but. new zealand's remaining match is against bangladesh which should in theory prove a relative formality. australia have to negoiate a tricky final match against south africa, but the fact that they have already won 3 games, means they will progress.
