Yeah tbf to the ref I don't think he could have been expected to see it, and th linesman (iirc) was on the other side of the goal so he can be excused for missing it as well. Mate of mine who I was watching it with immediately said "this would never have happened in the NFL, anything dodgy is immediately review by the video refs"...and he's right too, all could have been avoided if there was a man in a van or whatever watching this on a screen.

I hate officials with every fibre of my being, but I don't blame them for this. Clearest piece of evidence for Video-replays I've ever seen. Doesn't matter how many officials you had on or around the pitch, they could all of been unsighted with the goal and bodies all over the place.

But yeah, short of having officials every 5m on and around the pitch, there will always be something massively crucial and obvious like this that could be missed.

Indeed. Ball seemed to come off Gallas's arm too on first replay but I haven't seen it much so I'm not sure about that one. I don't think you could score a more illegal goal without some kind of stabbing being involved.
