WCC goes Twenty20

World Club Cricket management announced today that this season's 2nd XI cup competition will be played in the Twenty20 format. This season will be the first time in WCC history that 2nd XI sides will take part in a cup format. The 2nd XI cup will start in two weeks time, with the first matches played in between the 3rd One Day round and 4th First Class round.

After calls last season from various managers and fans last season for a Twenty20 Cup, the new management team at WCC headquarters have decided to use this new competition to test the potential that is Twenty20 Cricket. With all cup matches played mid week WCC will be looking to use this format to attract working spectators. So these fans can come to the cricket after finishing work and still be able to see a full game of cricket.

In the past mid week cup competitions, have struggled to gain sufficient support from fans. Last season a group format was used and didn't achieve any significant increases in the crowd numbers. This season both cups will go back to the old knockout format. The main cup will continue this season in the 50 over format, but there are talks depending of the success of the Twenty20 format in the 2nd XI Cup, both cups may use the shorten format in the future.

Court Controversially Steps Down From Captaincy

After just over a month in the job Free State 2nd XI Captain, Zachary Court, has decided to pass the job to another player. Court has only played twice for the 2nds this term after a few good performances at the top of the order for the 1st XI. "I feel that i can't give to the 2nd XI in the way that i want, especially now that i've found a place on the 1st XI" Said Court.

The club management were in shock at the decision, but they have accepted his explanation saying "It can only be to the benefit of the club that Zachary stands down from the captaincy role. Another player can take over the reigns this term and develop experience at a lower level, with a view to playing or captaincy, on the 1st XI.

As yet, nobody has been named for the 2nd XI captain, but it is thought that Adrian Haliwell and Steve Jewell are thought to be favourites for the role.

Steve Jewell Named Captain

This afternoon, Steve Jewell of Free State Eagles, was named captain of the 2nd XI. No real surprises with the selection as he was one of the favourites for the job, after Zachary Court had declined to captain the side after his performances on the 1st XI, of late.

"It's a dream come true for me. I've supported the Eagles since i first got into cricket, when i was about 8 or 9", Jewell remarked. " I hope to develop my captaincy at this level and then further my career on the 1st XI in a few years time, with a view of international cricket with Scotland", said Jewell.

The Chairman of Selectors, Abel Phillips, has said "We're in full support of Jewell's captaincy, we hope he can bring his flair and motivational aura to the team, especially in this time of transition".

With both 1st and 2nd XIs in mid table positions, the Eagles management hope that this move can spur some life into the Eagles performances as they look for promotion in both forms of the game.

Possible new Queensland manager Kyle Wright expressed his delight at the possibility at returning home. Wright has been at the healm of the Guyana Cricket Club in World Club Cricket since he joined WCC, and he has hinted many times of his desire to return home.

"I've been away from friends and family for so long, but I love my job and I love my players. It has taken so long for all of us to come together and we really feel we have something special. All the players have agreed to the move and they welcome the opportunity of playing on a new continent and in different conditions." Wright said.

"I'm sure the Guyana Cricket Board would also like a new outlook with a new manager and that manager would want to have his choice of players.

"Who knows with the reworking of WCC the squad sizes might be smalller and some players will stay behind.

"I look forward to developments over the next few days.

For those managers who are interest I would love to see some articles or profiles about their star/favorite players in their team. I'll do one on the man himself RTD later this weekend depending on how much I get done in updates. Just a tip the more you make up the better IMO.

Victoria have found their feet in the Twenty20 Competition.

Losing the toss and bowling first, we never allowed Warkwickshire to settle, taking wickets at regular intervals. Jon Moss and Brett Lee were economical, but Harwood was held wicketless.

We chased down the 129 run total, in under 17 overs, with new boy Terry Thomas staring with the bat, making 79 from 50 balls, including a massive 6 that landed out in the car park, to finish the game. Beasley batted well also, bringing up his 50 in 44 balls.
