WCC goes Twenty20
World Club Cricket management announced today that this season's 2nd XI cup competition will be played in the Twenty20 format. This season will be the first time in WCC history that 2nd XI sides will take part in a cup format. The 2nd XI cup will start in two weeks time, with the first matches played in between the 3rd One Day round and 4th First Class round.
After calls last season from various managers and fans last season for a Twenty20 Cup, the new management team at WCC headquarters have decided to use this new competition to test the potential that is Twenty20 Cricket. With all cup matches played mid week WCC will be looking to use this format to attract working spectators. So these fans can come to the cricket after finishing work and still be able to see a full game of cricket.
In the past mid week cup competitions, have struggled to gain sufficient support from fans. Last season a group format was used and didn't achieve any significant increases in the crowd numbers. This season both cups will go back to the old knockout format. The main cup will continue this season in the 50 over format, but there are talks depending of the success of the Twenty20 format in the 2nd XI Cup, both cups may use the shorten format in the future.
