Further to that (from Cricinfo) - "Kapil played an incredible innings, but he did gain some advantage from the fact that this match was played on a pitch at the very edge of the square at Tunbridge Wells. This meant that one boundary was immense, making it possible for batsmen to run three for a hit about ten metres to the side of a boundary fielder on that side, while on the other side two runs were impossible for the same hit. On the other hand, of course, fours and sixes were so much easier to hit on that side; a strong hit only a few yards from a boundary fielder would invariably beat him for four. "

ok...fair enough I am sure those two innings by Tendulkar were brilliant...but things to consider, one was in a losing effort, both innings he didnt see through to the end,and playing in the dry conditions of Sharjah must be consdered easier than playing on an overcast day at Old Trafford.

that last patnership of Richards and Holding, i think the score had been 166/9 in the 45th over (something like that anyway)...then Ricahrds just went berserk...hitting like you wouldnt beleive...in the space of a few overs he had taken WI from a losing position to what in those days was a massive score.

If you havent seen the score card grab a look

I doubt i will see anything like it again in my life time
Seems to have been an incredible innings. Hope I get to see it sometime.

In the semi's in Sharjah, India were chasing 282 just needed some 220 odd to qualify for the finals. The game was reduced to 46 overs due to a sandstorm( dunno how many times a sandstorm has interrupted play :) ) and the revised target was i think 271. With 4 overs to spare Sachin decided to go for the win and went berzerk smashing 3-4 sixes and some fours before he walked after an appeal was turned down. He may well have won it for India. :D

36 off 174 balls is a disgraceful effort.

That kind of scoring rate wouldn't be acceptable in a test, let alone an ODI.

That is quite simply the worst ODI innings ever.

BBC Report

Indian Legends

"Sunil Gavaskar
Statistics alone say everything about "The Little Master" - 10,122 Test runs (second only to Allan Border), an average of 51.12 over 125 matches, and a record 34 centuries.

But the true joy in watching Gavaskar bat was in revelling in how one of the shortest of batsmen - 5ft 4?in - could so dominate against the tallest and most feared fast bowlers.

Against the West Indies he was supreme, making his debut in the Caribbean in 1971 and scoring 774 runs at 154.80 in four Tests and, seven years later, scoring four centuries in as many matches, including 205 in Bombay.

A glittering career, was concluded with a century for the Rest of the World XI against MCC at Lord's, his first at headquarters.

For a mild man, he possessed a ruthless streak. In the first World Cup match, at Lord's in 1975, he batted through the innings (174 balls) for 36 not out in protest against the one-day game"

:) Just like in Hayden's 380 and Gilchrists 172?
Though whilst both innings were against Zimbabwe, they were still spectaclular ones.

Hayden: 380 (437) 4's: 38, 6's: 11, SR: 86.95
Gilchrist: 172 (126) 4's: 13, 6's: 3, SR: 136.50

:D

Are you going on about his protest about ODI's?

Because when I said that it was an disgraceful effort, I did not just mean by his strike rate, but his decison to protest, during a match as well is also disgraceful.

It's hard to tell that you meant that. You mentioned scoring rate, so it seemed that you were talking about his regular batting.
I have no idea as to why he was protesting against ODI's, but it's certainly a record for the slowest scoring in an ODI

Ford, Read 1-up...Sunil was in a protest
I probably didn't make myself clear that I also meant about his protest, not just his strike rate.

Thats why I used the word 'disgraceful' to describe his innings, not say a word like 'poor'.

If he wanted to protest, he could of done it not in a game!

Didn't know this abt Kapil

Quoted: "In 1990, he was batting when India required 24 runs to save the follow-on against England at Lord's with Narindra Hirwani (a bunny) at the other end, and four balls of an Eddie Hemmings over remaining.

The solution? Four balls, four sixes. Problem solved."

yes that's very true. I saw that innings...it was amazing. Kapil played out the first two balls of that over for no runs and then just went berserk. And the very next over in the first ball Hirwani was dismissed by Angus Fraser. That was the same test where Gooch scored a massive 330 odd runs and India lost the match due to a bad decision by Azharuddin asking England to bat first after he won the toss.
