the point re "the british brought law and order to the indigenous", language like that is most often used as a dogwhistle to cast the white man as the liberator of the simple savage, as opposed to a recognition that they hacked and slashed their way through thousands of kooris on their way to imposing their own legal system on a flourishing society which did in fact have its own laws

I haven't gone through the whole conversation you're referring to, but from the looks of it, in response to me mentioning the memorial to the British and Irish soldiers who died as young men far from home fighting nazi germany, I was told that the British and Irish soldiers were "rapists and murderers". In response to which I said (obviously in quite an emotive state having recently visited this memorial and read the inscriptions left by the mothers to their lost children), "You talk about rape and murder, when the Empire brought rue of law and civility. You talk about slavery when the Empire ended slavery."

But hey, if you can drop the word "dog whistle" that gives you the high ground man so congrats.

And to be fair I did use the phrase "rule of law and civility" in connection with the British Empire, and on reflection I should have known that there's always going to be at least one genius who can sniff this sort of stuff out, and identify that I view non-white people as simple savages. Howl howl howl, my darned racist stupidity. What with my reference to "civility", my defence of soldiers who died defending the free world, AND the demise of the aborigines, it all becomes clear. If I wasn't such a stupid racist I would have realised months ago how I'd been caught out.

I mean this year alone I've dated a black african woman, and saved the life of another black african woman and risked my own life in doing so. I go out of my way to give non white people a friendly smile in places where there aren't many minority folk about. But **** me, I referenced civility (however appropriately or inappropriately) in a conversation about Empire after someone had called those who gave their lives for us all "rapists and murderers", so I was caught out damn it.

Well, it's reassuring at least to know that there are some good guys around on the internet fighting the good fight, and weeding out the racists, because if the truth be known if there's one thing we racists dislike more than the savages, it's people who think that they are better racists than ourselves. I wish you and the team all the best in your continuing efforts in this regard in all walks of your lives, and I have every confidence that with your superior non racist intellects and your encyclopedic knowledge of the dog whistles, you'll continue doing a grand job of it.

Because you probably didn't take a hint. Some people don't take hints well. They will be listening to themselves and not taking the cues from their audience, even if that audience is stupid, that what they are saying is not being received well. The mods here are fair. They will drop hints that content is not going well and try to indicate where things are getting out of hand. But some people can't take a hint. It's either let 99% of the community start to opine in more and more reckless ways and let the forum turn to ****, or ban someone. That person doesn't need a reason for their ban.
