I think "tolerance" isn't really the intended cultural goal anymore. Understanding and acceptance are. And any lingering lazy ignorance will be challenged and confronted.

With understanding and acceptance comes tolerance.

But isn't the point of education that it is ongoing? Just because you are (or aren't) taught something at school doesn't mean that has to be your worldview for the rest of your life. The onus is on all of us to challenge what we are taught if evidence comes to light that it was misguided.

And from whence does this evidence come?
Education? As you correctly said, this needs to be challenged at times?
Reading? For many views expressed there can be found equally as convincing opposite views.
I believe the answer lies in travel and interacting with those from other lands. However. even this can give a skewed view. For instance, forty years ago I met an elderly Indian lady who believed that India was better off under colonial British rule.

From a multitude of sources - life experience, reading reliable sources, talking to people, introspection.

I think most people complaining that they are in some way 'discriminated' against because they are holding views from decades ago when society has moved on only have themselves to blame. They're either tone deaf, or they have refused to recognise the shift over time. This goes for those who were educated this way as well as those whose god tells them it's ok.

I'm not saying every person's new line of thinking is necessarily correct, it's not, but I went to school in the 80's, and things have obviously changed since then. Hanging onto education as a reason for having outdated views loses its validity the more time that has elapsed since that education occured. If someone genuinely believes something they held to be true 20, 30, 40 years ago or more is still fact when there's a weight of evidence that suggests otherwise, there's more at play that just how they were educated.
