Who should Sachin replace? Kaif or Yuvraj?

No way Tendulkar is going to open.

India have landed themselves into a bit of a mess with this Yuvraj opening stunt. Ganguly had not bargained for Yuvraj failing and Kaif scoring AND Sachin being available !!

Now we will have either a make shift opener (Parthiv) who is getting runs nevertheless but who may have to go into bat after a long session of hundreds of 'sit ups' as a wicket keeper

OR a makeshift opener (Yuvraj) who is woefuly out of touch, unfit to open and have to drop another middle order batsman who scored in the last match,

OR a regular opener (Chopra) who is short of runs, badly short of confidence, fighting to hold his place AND drop a midle order batsman who is amongst runs

Fruits of trying to be smarter by half :p

No. I mean Parthiv Opens.

All three options are about who opens assuming Sachin was not fit.

Then to that solution you apply Sachins availability and see what emerges. thats what I have done.
Ah, didn't pay attention closely  Too much Thermodynamic study going on in conjunction.

Anything below #5 and I believe Kaif's utility reduces to half of his potential.
It cant be helped I suppose. Not being an opener and with Rahul, Sachin, Laxman and Saurav he is unlikely to go higher for sometime.

Actually, if we get a decent full time opener (who is not a keeper) and if these four srtalwarts in the middle order are in form, there is no place at present for both Yuvraj and Kaif in the side for tests. This is a fact and has to be accepted.

Saurav realised that early and thats why pushed Yuvraj's claim for opening. I think India's problem should not be how to fit Yuvraj and/or Kaif in the eleven, but to find a suitable opener and a competent wicket keeper. This is not about Individuals , it is about team India and its deficiencies.

I'll be done with exams on Tuesday though, that too in the morning, before the Test starts, so not complaining :p

Agree with you. That's what I meant, if you WANT Kaif in the side, keep him at a position he'll be useful at, not just give him one that is available.

With a suitable opener and wicket-keeper, I agree, Kaif and Yuvraj would find it hard to be regulars. However, if I've to pick between the two, I'll choose Kaif any day, without doubt.

I totally agree.

I have just read that Tendulkar will not be 100 percent, so I guess him opening is unlikely, the only real alternative i can think of is Ganguly opens with Sehwag, Tendulkar 3, Dravid, Laxman, Patel

Its been talked of by some. But I dont see Ganguly trying to be the hero and opening, contrary to what someone tried to claim the other day.

I think Parthiv is the most likely choice. In any event, it wont ba a 'totally new face' from the middle order being sent up.

Tendulkar at 100% too shouldn't open in Tests.

open with patel and ghet him out of the way , i say let him go in attempt to get as many runs asap and then the real batsmen can come into play after the ball has been worn slightly.

Patel's batting seems to be under-rated here.
Yes just as Yuvraj's is over rated.

Parthiv's performance behind the stumps seems to influence peoples opinion of his batting too and Yuvraj's flamboyance (on or off the field) seems to make him everyones darling in total disregard of his capabilities.

Media tinted vision :D

yeah stuff Yuvraj, and open with Patel, I think hes a champ, and quite a decent batsmen. Then like those before me said, let the class do their work. Except for GAnguly, whats he doing there posing as a good batsmen? :p

Whatever it takes!!!
I think Yuvraj will make a better opener than Ganguly. But having said that, Sourav can somehow conjure up a good technique and play well when he really puts his mind to it. After all, he played well on the most seamer friendly track we got in Australia, at the Gabba. So, I will not totally rule out Sourav opening if India have been in the field for long and asking Parthiv to open would be too much. But then again, if somebody from the middle order has to be pushed up to open, Dravid or Sachin would be the logical choice as they both have excellent techniques.

Ideally, Chopra would come back into the team with Ganguly realising he made a mistake opening Yuvraj. The team should of stayed the same, with Kaif replacing Yuvraj for the second test, and then Sachin replacing Kaif for the third, despite Kaif batting well.

Therefore my team (though highly unlikely):
Chopra
Sehwag
Dravid
Tendulkar
Laxman
Ganguly
Patel
Kumble
Harbhajan
Zaheer
Nehra (I'd prefer Agarkar)

That's considering Balaji and Pathan are injured, and it seems AA doesn't have a chance.
