Tbf Hazare did magnificently in his short Test career, which began at 32 post peak, as well.Gower is surely a more accomplished test batsman than Hazare. Vijay was a FC monster but the standard of bowling faced is a bit dubious.
Gower is more accomplished. Hazare may or may not have done better with a full career.Tbf Hazare did magnificently in his short Test career, which began at 32 post peak, as well.
But still think Hazare is the better cricketer.Gower is more accomplished. Hazare may or may not have done better with a full career.
The standard of bowling he faced in first class is dubious imo. Deserves credit for being a pioneer&titan at a time when India were only just formulating as a cricket nation (Merchant also), but Gower is the more proven batsman imo.But still think Hazare is the better cricketer.
Also, in FC matches in England, Merchant has the 3rd best average after only Don and Headley (including Englishmen). Hazare probs a little behind as a pure batsman, but not much imho. Gower is kinda underrated, but Hazare was a menace in FC matches, especially in India. Heck he averages like 70 in Tests at home. Scored plenty in unofficial Tests and more than few in England and Australia FC games. And then there's his bowling, which is proper all-rounder level everywhere (away tour FC, domestic, unofficial Tests) but in Tests (tbf debuted at 32).Here's Peterhrt's post on Merchant:-
Merchant faced several good bowlers in first-class cricket. Number of dismissals by the better ones (including Tests):
5 - Verity
4 - Gubby Allen
3 - Mankad, Nissar
2 - Dooland, Ghulam Ahmed
1 - Amar Singh, Bedser, Fazal Mahmood, Larwood, Ramadhin, Statham, Tribe
0 - Bailey, Bowes, Laker, Miller, Tom Pritchard, Tarrant, Voce, Jack Walsh
When one or more of these bowlers was in the opposition, Merchant scored 3762 runs at an average of 60.67, with 12 centuries.
Merchant normally opened the batting in England, but not in India. 25 of his 45 first-class hundreds came when he batted between numbers three and six.
Bedser said he was the best overseas batsman he ever saw on rain-affected Eng
lish pitches.
