I don't think you can compare Kumble's 24 wickets on absolute roads against an all-time great batting lineup in 2003-4 against Ashwin's 12@28 in three tests, He had a couple of good spells but it wasn't that great a performance.
Lol.. SCG was definitely way more helpful to spinners than any track in this recent past BG series. And I would argue roads favor spinners more than some of the tracks this time or before during Ashwin's career did.

I kinda agree with @srbhkshk that Kumble's performance was against a much better batting line up and for that reason, that tour holds. And he also has a better record in England than Ashwin has had so far. So I have no second opinions on choosing Kumble but Ashwin is definitely closing the gap much faster than I ever thought he would. And, the 5fer argument is still nonsensical.

Yeah Kumble's was definitely better. Both teams were making proper big scores in 2003-04 and Kumble as often the lone warrior. The batting Kumble was bowling to was so much stronger too.
