Who are your favourite fielders?

Botham was before my time (at least, almost all of his games were - by the time I was watching he was long past the time he should've been playing). Hick, well, yeah, he had great hands size-wise but I remember him dropping a decent share of catches, including a couple which cost a Test series (England in WI 1994). Can't ever have him up with the very best.
Atherton and Hussain were decent close fielders (Hussain was good in the outfield too) but I'd have Hick at slip above either of them. I'll admit though that that's nothing more than a matter of impression really, I've no idea as to their respective records for dropped catches etc.

I can barely remember Atherton missing a thing - though I know he did from time to time, everyone did, even Walter Hammond. Hick, though, as I say, I'll never quite forgive him for that dual reprieve off Chanderpaul that allowed him to play the knock that allowed Ambrose to skittle England at QPO. And I definately remember him missing one or two others for no apparent reason. Atherton, well, whenever he did miss them I must've been away from the TV.

Hussain, as I say, he was only ever a slipper to the spinners, he wasn't much crack against the quicker lot and always fielded in the outfield to them, where he was excellent. But he was quite a specialist to the spinners and usually stood there and I barely remember him missing a thing (not that that was too difficult, given how often England spinners tended to take the edge of the bat during his career).

Tony Greig, also a very fine slipper, pulled off a catch no one else could have to get rid of Wasim Raja at Lords in 1974 - Wasim hit Underwood pretty straight for what should have been six only for Greig on the boundary to leap towards the heavens and pull it down

With a bit of luck LT will have access to the footage?

Some from the subcontinent

Sri Lanka - Generally good outfielders quick on their feet. Dilshan (damn, he won a man of the match for his fielding in Australia VB series final) is the best.

India - Not much of great outfielders since Yuvraj Singh's operation and Kaif's omission. Laxman is still gun in the slips, Dravid was till recently but his relfexes have waned considerably. Azharuddin was the master fielder in the test team for a long time, and he was perhaps among the greatest slip fielders.

Pakistan - Weak in fielding. Some young guns like Imran Nazir, Misbah are there.

Bangladesh - :(

Yep ABdV is an excellent fielder, and a versatile one.

(I still can't forgive him for claiming That Catch a few months ago though - although I'm prepared to accept it was out of character)

I just wish ABdeV (and the rest of his team) hadn't let their standards fall so badly on the 2005/06 tour of Australia. I was worried the same thing was going to happen this time, and fortunately it hasn't this time. Standards, never mind being maintained, have been raised to meet Australia and it's meant they've won.

Still don't think there's enough evidence to suggest that was straight out cheating

Jeetan Patel is proving himself to be a pretty decent fielder for NZ. He's taken some pretty useful catches at point over the last couple of years; which is unusual for a bowler I'd say. Think how unco some spinners have been over the years - Tufnell and Such in particular.
Sorry dear, but your own Chris Harris and Ruwan Kalpage (who are incidentally from same era) were gun fielders who are bowlers. Later Murali, Warne, Jayasuriya, Brian McMillain, Pollock and Kallis made in to that list as fine fieldsmen.

Jeetan Patel(New Zealand), AB De Villiers, Paul Collingwood and Symonds are all brilliant fielders:)
