Who are England’s long-term all-rounder options after Stokes and Woakes?

Obviously England didn’t go down the route of naming a like-for-like replacement for Stokes and promoted Woakes but it got me thinking, Stokes is 33 and has been picking up injuries, and Woakes is 35, who takes over from them in the next few years?
Sam Curran has played Tests, but not for a while and not convincingly, though he is playing his first red ball game this season, is this with a view to getting back into the England Test team?
Kasey Aldridge hit a brisk 78 for the Lions against a strong Sri Lanka side and was excellent with the ball against Leicestershire the other day and is only 23 so could be playing for another decade plus
Ryan Higgins and Ed Barnard have been plugging away for a while, but are they too old? They’ll probably be in their 30s by the time either of the incumbents calls it a day

I think Curran is more of a Woakes replacement than Stokes, aside from probably not being a likely test standard regular anyway.

Unless there is a genuine all rounder prospect, I would simply look for the most competent bowler who can bat half decent, or batter who can bowl half decent than go down the Derek Pringle style route of a’ no rounder’.

In Australia in 2010-11 we had (in addition to an extremely strong batting lineup) Broad (averaging 28 with the bat at the time), Swann and Bresnan bat at #8 as well as Collingwood who could bowl a bit, but what batters are around who can bowl as well as Collingwood? Closest thing to him in the current squad (in terms of seam bowlers at least) is…Harry Brook?

Root is usually good for circa 10 overs a day as a support act and Lawrence may get a few more overs this series. I wouldn’t really want to see many overs from Brook.

Fair, although I am talking about the next few years, Root of course is the same age as Stokes so won’t go on forever (although as a batter who only bowls part-time spin he’s likely to last longer) and Lawrence isn’t a guaranteed pick going forward (maybe slots into the middle order when Root goes?)

Aldridge is definitely on the selectors' radar. Suspect they probably consider Higgins' bowling too slow to be effective at Test level. Barnard may be too old by now. I think the case for SCurran as a Test all-rounder has been presented and found wanting.

There are some other promising all-rounders in county cricket like George Hill and Matt Revis at Yorkshire.

I like Bashir and he’s done fine so far this summer, but I was a little bit surprised that it was him and not Hartley who got the nod considering Hartley is a lefty. Maybe his batting is more of the level of a Graeme Swann than a genuine all-rounder though, so I don’t think that would play into the thinking too much

Aldridge showed good intent against Sri Lanka, which won’t harm him (even though judging by the second innings it might not quite be the deal-breaker it might have seemed up until then!)

Well i would call up Sam Cook, similar pace to woakes, but he couldnt bat at 7. The teams falling apart. But theres the england bowling consultant with 700+ wkts sitting on the sidelines.

Woakes is in the squad so it looks like he’ll be ok, but if he weren’t available, surely Cox, or perhaps Curran as a short-term measure would come in as Atkinson at 7 is a step too far

I thought the last couple of years domestically and ipl stuff that Curran had been playing as a top order batsman? I can see a time post stokes where smith bats 6 and Curran 7 in tests.
This will only happen if smith averages late 30s or more.
