More of a difference for me is that the Indian line up doesn't even have a settled list of 7 names.

So, like many here, you could say it's Gilchrist that swings it for the Aussies.
Yeah.

Here is another approach:

Gambhir (6.5/10)
Sehwag (8/10)
Dravid (8.5/10)
Tendulkar (9.5/10)
Laxman (7.5/10)
Raina (5/10)
Dhoni (5/10)
Total (50/70)

Langer (7/10)
Hayden (8/10)
Ponting (9/10)
Martyn (6.5/10)
Waugh (9/10)
Katich (6/10)
Gilchrist (8/10)
Total (53.5/70)

Without the difference between Gilchrist and Dhoni (3 points), it's mighty close till now.

Yeah.

Sehwag (8.5/10)
Dravid (8.5/10)
Tendulkar (9.5/10)
Laxman (8/10)
Raina (5/10)
Dhoni (5/10)
Total (51/70)

Langer (7/10)
Hayden (8/10)
Ponting (9/10)
Martyn (6.5/10)
Waugh (9/10)
Katich (6/10)
Gilchrist (8/10)
Total (53.5/70)

Without the difference between Gilchrist and Dhoni (3 points) India has the better lineup. Gilchrist tilts it towards australia and even then it's too close to call.
fixed. laxman's performance in clutch scenarios cant be overstated. and sehwag is better than hayden period.

Sehwag is so much better than hayden that if you ignore sehwag's average at home he still averages as much as hayden. (sehwag's away average: 50.6, hayden overall:50.7 not to mention the 80+ strike rate).

Personally I don't Sehwag and Hayden can be compared until Sehwag retires - who's to say he won't have a form slump as Hayden did and end up averaging 50 or less?

Meh I think I'm pretty much ready to call that one now. I don't really take Hayden's last little blip into consideration when I rate him as a Test cricketer; he was finished. If you ignored that and Sehwag retired now, I'd still take Sehwag.

I don't think it's necessarily a big enough gap to demand a difference in points when rating them out of 10, but it's there.

Yes, if Sehwag were to retire now (or at any point whilst still at the top of his game) then you'd have to say he'll go down in history as a better player, but until he does finish, we won't know how his career pans out.

The completing career thing only matters to me if the player currently playing has played lesser than the retired player. But, In this case that is not true. Despite playing 3-5 tests in the 90s, Hayden played pretty much his entire career between 2000-2008. Sehwag has played for a similarly long period(if not more).

Sehwag might retire on a high when considering the sort of player he is. He won't try to hang on like Dravid imo
