Fair comments, apart from the all-rounder roll. Gomez averaged 30.3 with the bat and 27.4 with the ball against Allen's 24.2 with the bat and 29.4 as a bowler. Allen's figures were boosted by games against pre-war India and N.Z. while against Australia his bowling average was 37.3 compared with Gomez who had 18 wickets @ 14.2 against Australia.Rate Paynter highly myself but feels like overrating to have him ahead of McCabe who could also bowl few overs if needed.
Agreed with having 3 quicks+O’Reilly though.Given the greatness of O’Reilly 2nd spinner isn’t really needed unless a turner.Incase you want a all rounder Gubby Allen should be a better choice instead of Gomez, due to being proper 4th bowler plus a decent bat.
It seems light on bowling to me considering Faulkner and Noble were much more batting allrounders than their raw stats show. Rhodes also a pretty weird cricketer - hard to really consider him a frontline bowler given he stopped doing it as he went up the order.1890s and 1900s both fall a bit short, but they give a good combined XI:
Jack Hobbs
Victor Trumper
Ranjitsinhji
Clem Hill
Stanley Jackson
Aubrey Faulkner
Monty Noble*
Wilfred Rhodes
Dick Lilley+
Tom Richardson
Sydney Barnes
Hugh Trumble worth an inclusion? It seems light on bowling to me considering Faulkner and Noble were much more batting allrounders than their raw stats show. Rhodes also a pretty weird cricketer - hard to really consider him a frontline bowler given he stopped doing it as he went up the order.
It's a shame Turner debuted three years before that period starts.
Yeah definitely - I thought he'd debuted a little earlier. I'd get him in for Rhodes there.Hugh Trumble worth an inclusion?
I'm not suggesting it proves anything, but I thought it was curious how similar the figures are for Trumble and Rhodes across the 3 series they both played in (1899, 1902 and 1903-4):Yeah definitely - I thought he'd debuted a little earlier. I'd get him in for Rhodes there.
idk why but in my head Green debuted in the 2010’s too. Feels he’s been in and out forever. What does 2020s look like so far?
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Devon Conway
Harry Brook
Kamindu Mendis
Saud Shakeel
Jamie Smith
Cameron Green
Kyle Jamieson
Axar Patel
Asitha Fernando
Mohammed Siraj/Scott Boland
Obviously no idea which new bowlers will go on to achieve big things, this is more 'on current output' kinda thing. Jamieson and Conway are surprising inclusions for me, I'd not have guessed they debuted after 2020 given they both seem to have peaked in 2021. Honestly can't think of another wicketkeeper.
I would go a mixture of potential and record since 2020's is barely halfway done ..What does 2020s look like so far?
You forgot 1900's (Hobbs)Best players daybooed in the 1920s (Bradman), 1950s (Sobers), 1970s (Marshall) and 1990s (Gilchrist).
I'm trying to do mental gymnastics to make the answer the 1920s but the bowling is just too weak
