Which Decade Saw the Best Players Debut?

Line and Length

Cricketer Of The Year
Rate Paynter highly myself but feels like overrating to have him ahead of McCabe who could also bowl few overs if needed.

Agreed with having 3 quicks+O’Reilly though.Given the greatness of O’Reilly 2nd spinner isn’t really needed unless a turner.Incase you want a all rounder Gubby Allen should be a better choice instead of Gomez, due to being proper 4th bowler plus a decent bat.
Fair comments, apart from the all-rounder roll. Gomez averaged 30.3 with the bat and 27.4 with the ball against Allen's 24.2 with the bat and 29.4 as a bowler. Allen's figures were boosted by games against pre-war India and N.Z. while against Australia his bowling average was 37.3 compared with Gomez who had 18 wickets @ 14.2 against Australia.

60s seems so weak compared to both decades either side. Just one of those things I guess.

1890s and 1900s both fall a bit short, but they give a good combined XI:
Jack Hobbs
Victor Trumper
Ranjitsinhji
Clem Hill
Stanley Jackson
Aubrey Faulkner
Monty Noble*
Wilfred Rhodes
Dick Lilley+
Tom Richardson
Sydney Barnes
It seems light on bowling to me considering Faulkner and Noble were much more batting allrounders than their raw stats show. Rhodes also a pretty weird cricketer - hard to really consider him a frontline bowler given he stopped doing it as he went up the order.

It's a shame Turner debuted three years before that period starts.

Answering my question posed in the title, I see 3 or 4 decades standing head and shoulders above the rest in the Post War period. The '90s and '70s have impressive sides while the '50s is also solid. The '40s (which really is only half a decade of debuts) warrants special mention.

Hugh Trumble worth an inclusion?

If we could include Turner as well it'd actually be the best eleven IMO, but I guess you'd expect that when combining 23 years against 10 years for all the other teams.

Yeah definitely - I thought he'd debuted a little earlier. I'd get him in for Rhodes there.
I'm not suggesting it proves anything, but I thought it was curious how similar the figures are for Trumble and Rhodes across the 3 series they both played in (1899, 1902 and 1903-4):

Trumble: 360 runs @ 20.00, 65 wickets @ 17.60
Rhodes: 211 runs @ 19.18, 66 wickets @ 17.65

Rhodes career is really amazing everytime I think about it. He bowled less and less as he moved up the order then after the war he had to be the main bowler for his county again . Then in 1926 he was brought back for the decisive 5th test and came away with 2/35 and 4/44.

Career length is obvs ridiculous but a little inflated - only played one test each in the 21 and 26 ashes and then was part of a b team tour to the Windies in 1930.

What does 2020s look like so far?

Yashasvi Jaiswal
Devon Conway
Harry Brook
Kamindu Mendis
Saud Shakeel
Jamie Smith
Cameron Green
Kyle Jamieson
Axar Patel
Asitha Fernando
Mohammed Siraj/Scott Boland

Obviously no idea which new bowlers will go on to achieve big things, this is more 'on current output' kinda thing. Jamieson and Conway are surprising inclusions for me, I'd not have guessed they debuted after 2020 given they both seem to have peaked in 2021. Honestly can't think of another wicketkeeper.

idk why but in my head Green debuted in the 2010’s too. Feels he’s been in and out forever.

Arguably SF Barnes as well I suppose, but no credit should be given to any Englishman here

The 70s or 90s, then the rest. The 70s really doesn't have a better spinner? And for the 90s, curious why Saeed isn't an option as an opener for 90s.
