Viv vs Lara vs Smith: Who has the best series performances?

Kirkut

International Regular
Man for man 1976 was miles better though.

Look at the names:
Snow, Willis, Hendrick, Old, Underwood, Greig etc.

Who played in 2019?

Broad, Archer's sole good series, Woakes, Leach, Stokes

No comparison
Underwood was quality, Snow was OK that series. Willis was quality but flat pitches reduced his effectiveness.

England prepared proper seaming wickets in 2019 which got Cummins a whopping 29 wickets in 5 tests. I agree with Lara's performances against SL and Aus topping Smith in Ashes '19, but it (Smith's Ashes) still beats Viv in 76.

All said and done, Viv scored around a hundred more runs than Smith in the same number of innings at a 75 SR against a better attack. I still go with him.

It's a decent attack. Very good bowlers but not in the same tier as Broad/Anderson or Flintoff/Jones. Yes, if Trueman was playing in that series, then maybe I would see this differently.

I remember watching Viv's 291 long back on youtube, the bowlers kept bowling short after short even when Viv pull/hooked them at ease. There was no strategy :thumbdown

Woakes is amazing at home and Archer bowled great. Don't think there's a massive difference tbh.

On paper there is. Snow, Willis, Underwood are all ATVGs and better than Broad who was the best in 2019. In practicality though, 2019 was probably more challenging, as 76 was more or less high scoring overall.

Will take Lara 1999, 2001 and Viv 1979(cause of the contextual factors, wickets etc)(the last two series somewhat slightly) over 2019

Not in the same tier?

Really?

Lara 99 and 01 are the two best here. Viv 79, if to compare directly to a Smith series, will do with 2017 BGT.
Viv won WI that series, plus with 2017 BGT, Smith only faced one really tough track(many dropped chances). Viv’s 1979 vs Lillee, Hogg and Thomson was flawless: 396 runs in 4 innings, lowest score of 80 odd, plus more attacking than Smith. Even Smith’s Pune hundred was without pressure, when Hogg nearly took Viv’s head off, the series was on the line and WI’s demons from 75/76 were about to return, before Viv brutalised him and basically who’s career

But yes Lara 99 and 2001 are the best here. Then Viv 79, Smith 2019, then Viv 76 and then Smith 2017. Viv’s ATG series in Pak also a candidate. man so many series in different conditions, where he was the difference between the teams

Lara 99 is unequalled.

I regard Viv 79 as equal with Lara 2001, because Viv 79 was so much more consequential.

Then Viv 76, then Smith 2019 and 2017.

How can you be certain that Smith batted without pressure in 2017? Are you implying that winning in Australia in 79 for Windies was bigger than winning in India for Aus? Let's not forget that adapting to Australian conditions for a West Indian batsman is relatively easier (due to similar pitches at home) than it is for Aussie batsmen to adapt to slow turning Indian wickets.

Besides, I sense a bias here where scoring against top fast bowling attacks is rated higher than scoring against top spin attacks. In that case Smith's 2019 Ashes should be ranked above Lara in SL 2001.
