You might claim them as matchwinning but are they matchwinning without whatever knock either set them up or finished the job?
Yes but it's kinda simple maths. A top bat still needs more contributions from other bats on average to set up the game. A top bowler taking for e.g. half the wickets in a innings has a bigger individual impact by default and is easier to set aside as a matchwinner since that is their role.

Smith is older, less in form and plays less test. Unlikely.
Less in form in catches? Meh. Australia have better bowlers that create more chances at slip for him. He takes more catches per match than Root easily. Doesn’t need to play as many tests as him to surpass him. Root played 17 matches and took 24 catches last year. Smith played 9 matches and took 22. Is there going to be that big a discrepancy in their tests going forward?

Less in form in term of batting, but that effects how long they'd stay around for imo. How many games are Australia playing this year and the next?

I think all of the Fab Four are in the same situation as Kohli. They won’t be dropped while they’re available, no matter what. Similar to Tendulkar and Ponting a decade ago. Its just how it works.

Actually I think Australia plays an extra one this year unless I’ve missed something.

Australia: First match of B/G, 2 vs SL, 1 vs SA, 3 vs WI, 4 Ashes
England: 1 vs Zimbabwe, 5 vs India, 4 Ashes

Who are the top 10 bowlers?

Top bowlers have way more matchwinning spells on average.

How often does that happen in a typical greats career?
This post itself puts Smith ahead of Viv.

The whole narrative around Viv's greatness is built on his ability to single handedly win games with his aggressive batting. And now you admit indirectly that without a great bowling attack Viv's influence would have not been as pronounced as it is today.

Which filters down the batting comparison to run scoring ability and Smith wins.
