sobers is greatest cricketer and smith is true atg but sachin averaged 58 in 90s which was bowling friendly. I doubt smith averages 50 plus since bowling era started in 2018
In 90s era number of batsman with 50+ AVG- 4
In current era number of batsman with 50+ AVG -1

May be You are not aware about this era being the toughest since last 60 years.
Against top 4 teams
Steve Smith average and sachin average are equal.

4 of these hundreds were amazing too:

1) 111 out of a team score of 227 vs Donald
2) 169 vs Donald/Pollock after India had collapsed to 58-5
3) 155 vs Pollock/Ntini after India had collapsed to 68-4
4) 146 and the famous battle vs Steyn

But Steve Waugh was better in Donald’s Era scored 508 Runs in 9 Innings @56.44 Runs Per Innings.

I do not know if it was a mental block or some other reason - Donald didn’t do well against or in Australia.

For a bowler of his calibre, he should have done very well in Australian pitches and if he can do well against Sachin & Lara, he should have done well against Waugh Bros.

It has something to do with pitches, In India pitches were suitable for low bounce and suddenly when they tour South Africa the ball bounces high and it used to make Indian Batsmen struggle, Steve Waugh was habituated to high bouncy pitches in Australia so it was a cake walk for him in South Africa. South Africa also had the Warne factor in mind as they were not so good players of Spin. Sachin and Lara had a weak team so more pressure. Donald’s Failure against South Africa is explained by Wasim Akram in the below video.
