Two completely different bowlers. Vern was a magnificent opening bowler tailor made to any sort of pitch movement. Outside that he was at best a stock bowler that got found wanting where fitness was required.

Gillespie was a excellent 3rd seamer that could be used throughout the innings.

Coming from South African partisan defending South African bowler

I disagree. If his average was higher but he didn't dodge Tests he'd be rated higher by a lot of people
Your assumption about who I think is the better overall bowler goes along with your assumptions regarding Philander dodging test. It’s like your assumption that he never missed tests in SA with injuries.

Daemon is right. In all seriousness Philander was an incredible bowler in certain conditions, and he played in those conditions a lot.
If Aus had Philander instead of Gillespie in Ashes 2005, they would have easily won it
Gillespie was garbage in Ashes 2005.
So Green track bullies are extremely essential in certain conditions.

If Philander was Aussie he'd have been Chadd Sayers. In the mid 00s he probably wouldn't even make a Shield team

Not necessarily, but there's no way he's getting selected ahead of him to play for Australia. Nor should he be in the conditions Lee mostly played in
Philander would have been an Aussie legend considering he would have won you guys Ashes in England.
If Warne with mid-30 average in 00 in Australia could play for you, so would have Philander.

No way Philander is worse than Stuart Clark who played 24 tests for Aus.

Stuart Clark is way better than Philander (don't ask me why)
Mate Andrew McDonald got a Test cap for Straya in the mid 2000's bowling medium filth so I highly doubt this ?
2009 isn't mid 2000s ****

Aus didn't really pick bowlers like that back then anyway. We had guys like Luke Butterworth playing for Tasmania down in Hobart and averaging 20 in the Shield but never get close to selection because everyone knew he was playing all his home games on green tops. That would have been Philander
