Seems likely to be confirmed at 1 o'clock when the ECB press conference is held - if so someone could remove the question-mark from the thread title.

Thought it should be a separate thread rather than in the SA-in-England thread. Though if it happened there'd be a certain similarity to the last time the England captain resigned in the during-a-home-series-with-SA capacity.

It'd be a real shame if so for mine, but you couldn't really moan too much if so. He's simply not played well this summer and shouldn't be an automatic selection in the team.

I believe he still the right man for England. All I hope is that he's going to withdraw from the last test to regain some form, but retain the captaincy for India.

This England side is not bad, they're just not applying themselves. Wholesale changes, especially to the leadership, would be a mistake.

Think the time is right. If he relinquishes the captaincy and gets dropped, perhaps in time he can return just a batsman, might do some good without the pressure of the armband.

Just hope it's Strauss and not Pietersen who gets the job next.

I still hope Vaughan could return to the team, if he were to not play at The Oval, but whether he will I'm not enormously optimistic.

He is probably still the best available captain but the other bats aren't good enough to carry a specialist skipper; that's basically what he has been of late.

I dont blieve that Shah, Key,Bopara or Joyce are better long term options than Vaughan.

Well, it'd depend. Purely on captaincy, I doubt he'd have made much difference, but who knows, he might have scored more runs than Cook, Collingwood or whoever he ended-up replacing.

20 years? You might remember the appointment of Chris Cowdrey then. But not the appointment of Tony Lewis for the tour of India in 1972/73 when he'd never even played Test Cricket and was nearly 35.

well he won last years t20 and in the final of this year so the ecb's warped veiw will probably mean they think he is god.
